This very narrow lake of 28 acres is
located just west of Highway 101 about ten miles south of Florence. Very heavily planted with rainbow trout including lots of surplus steelhead and brood stock fish, it also contains poor populations of largemouth bass and yellow perch. A good-sized pond slightly south of the lake and on the east side of the highway drains into the lake and probably offers slightly better bass fishing in addition to some native cutthroat trout. There is a boat ramp on the north end of the lake close to the highway. The lake became very low in the falls of 2001 and 2002. In the last few years through 2009, there have been almost no warmwater fish taken from Carter and the frequent droughts may have done them in. Most people think that Carter Lake is in Lane County.
