Opening day is usually not one of those days that you will find me anywhere’s close to a lake but this was one of those times that I made an exception. The opener just happened to fall on a day that my brother made the trek up here from Oregon. After a lengthy discussion we decided that a later start would probably be our best bet on opening day and we would once again give Black Lake ...

Fishing for spring chinook has been slow, except for the area below where Rock Creek enters the North Umpqua. The entire mainstem Umpqua has been fishing very slow. Another small springer was reported takenat Half Moon Bay last week, but the lower river has not been productive for any salmon and even the feeder chinook out in the ocean were tough to find last week - partly because of bar and ocean...

We went from a chilly spring right into blazing hot summer this past week. The weather warmed up the water on many of our larger lakes. That means that some of the popular warm water fisheries are getting close to really taking off. Walleye and bass fishing should be hitting their stride on Potholes Reservoir, Moses Lake and Banks Lake very soon. I made a trip to Moses Lake during this hot...

We sure had some great weather over the past weekend, and I hope you were able to get out and spend some time on the water. It looks like spring has arrived, or maybe even early summer with the temperatures we’re getting. This will mean the launch of some new fisheries in our region. Walleye and smallmouth bass fishing should be coming into their own very soon. I decided to skip the annual...

The opening weekend of trout fishing was a good one in the region. Those who got out early in the morning experienced excellent fishing on most of the lakes. Winds grew in strength, and made fishing difficult later in the day. Overall, lots of large, quality rainbow were taken and the opener was one of the best in years. I left early on Saturday morning and made my first stop at Blue Lake,...

As I have said many times before my main office is my boat on a lake somewhere in the NW. Over the years I have found more times than not that a successful meeting has been accomplished over a trout hook-up or two. The other day was just such an occasion as I met up with Editor Kelly Riordin to discuss what future stories should be included in upcoming issues of this magazine. I was up at 4:30...

Spring chinook angling between Scottsburg and Elkton has picked up noticeably. Of course, anybody who has recently driven along that stretch of Highway 38 could already guess this from the number of truck/boat trailer rigs parked along the highway because the boat ramp parking areas are full. It seems that those light bites of the previous week have turned into bites strong enough to actually get ...

This coming weekend will see the biggest crowds of anglers for the year. It’s the annual opener of the lowland lakes, and thousands of anglers will be headed our way to try their luck on the many wonderful lakes in our region. I plan to take a survey of the opening day action on some of the lakes in Okanogan County, but in the meantime I have made a couple of trips to Lake Chelan for the jumbo ...

For my first couple of trout outing’s this year I chose a few Thurston County lakes to get back in form. St. Claire was the first one on my agenda. This is a lake that I have worked only one time and that was years ago. This seemed like it would be a good challenge and a great way to spend a few afternoon hours. Before I delve in on our adventure I would like to comment on the bank anglers here. I...

It was almost like karma. An angler had asked me if I had heard of any spring chinook being hooked inside the Triangle and I had told them that I had not. A couple of hours later, while I was selling a salmon tag to Christopher Edwards of Winchester Bay, he stated that a week or so previously, an angler he was fishing with had hooked and nearly landed what he felt was a spring chinook while fishin...

The opening weekend for the lowland lakes is just a couple of weeks away, and anglers are already making plans to visit their favorite destination for the annual event. I love the opener. When my wife I and make our swing through the region we see families that have been going to the same location for decades. We have met families that have four generation along to enjoy their annual trip to E...
