I couldn’t have timed my fishing trip better last week. It was the only day that it didn’t pour down rain in the area. My wife and I had clear, sunny skies and no wind when we traveled to Bridgeport for a day of steelhead fishing. It was the last trip that we could make in the Jetcraft that I have been using, thanks to the folks at Kingfisher Boats and Bob Feil Boats and Motors. It was a perf...

Steelhead fishing opened on the Columbia and most of the tributaries this week. Anglers are out in force to participate in this treasured fall and winter fishery. Steelhead catches are expected be good, particularly at the mouths of the rivers, as flows are very low on all of the streams in our region. While I waited for the announcement of the steelhead season, I took advantage of a sunny fa...

I sure picked a great two days for my first steelhead trips of the season. The weather was mild, with very little wind and no rain. I started out fishing bobbers and jigs in the Pateros area, and then floated the Methow River fishing with flies. Last Thursday, my fishing buddies Jim Passage and Tom Bartlett helped me launch the Jetcraft at the ramp at the mouth of the Methow River. I chose...

Winchester Bay crabbing continues to be the hottest thing going in our area. Virtually all the boat crabbers that are putting in a reasonable amount of time are getting all the crabs they want. Even the dock crabbers are making good catches, but there have been some two or three hour stretches where female crabs have dominated the catch. The most successful crabbers don’t panic, but just keep crab...

This great weather continues to dominate the forecasts this fall. I hope that we get an announcement on our steelhead seasons soon, but it just doesn’t seem right to be fishing for steelhead in shirtsleeves! I had some fun this week, trying the fall fishing for rainbow at Fish Lake, near Lake Wenatchee. I also had a frustrating day trying to catch a big triploid at Rufus Woods Reservoir. M...

Crabbing at Winchester Bay continues to be very good for boat anglers and fair to good for dockbound crabbers. There appears to be some confusion as to when the ocean closes to sport crabbing and the correct answer is that it closes on October 15th and will reopen on December 1st. Crabbing in our coastal river systems is open all year. Winchester Bay’s annual Crab Bounty Hunt is currently und...

I have been on the road a lot the past week. I drove down to the Columbia River Gorge to Biggs and spent a couple of days fishing the river for smallmouth bass. Then I traveled to Nehalem on the Oregon coast, which is between Tillamook and Seaside. I fished for salmon there, but left on Thursday afternoon to get back to help get things set up for the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival. Close to ...

With my book promotion days coming to an end I am trying to get my life back to normal. What is normal you ask? Spending time on the water doing what I enjoy the most, fishing. I have spent most of the last five years chasing trout, that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy salmon and steelhead I just haven’t had the time to pursue them. I grew up on the Columbia, angling for salmon and steelhead was a way ...

So far our September weather is spectacular, and I have seen a drop in overall pressure on the fishing areas of our region. This means a lot more room to move on the water and great weather to enjoy the early fall season. I do expect to see a jump in the number of boats on the Columbia River at White Bluffs and below Wanapum Dam as fall fish move up stream. I also expect to see a few more boats...

We’ve got great weather forecast for the days ahead, and that should encourage anglers to take advantage of the many great fishing opportunities in our region. Summer-run salmon are abundant in the upper Columbia. Fly fishing the small streams in our region is at its peak, and don’t forget the spiny ray fishing should be terrific in our area’s reservoirs and lakes. I told folks in my...
