Re: Lake Stevens Alum Treatments
Josh- The first alum treatment on Stevens was in 2014 and was timed at about the time that the small fry were planted into the lake. A classic case of the WDFW, the City of Lake Stevens and the consultant not talking with each other. As noted in the thread I was concern that there could be excessive...

Re: Lake Stevens Alum Treatments
Given the recent reports from Stevens and what appears to be some tough fishing I thought I would bring this thread back to the top of the Forum. Unfortunately the concerns about the potential survival of the kokanee fry in 2014 appears to have been justified, That concern was based on the lack of p...

Re: Lake Merwin Kokanee
One of the unique aspects of kokanee fishing is that for some reason the vast majority of the fish that bite our hooks are fish that will spawn this year. On most waters typically more than 90% of the fish are maturing fish. That means that a lack of fish early in the season is not from the harvest ...

Re: Lake Stevens round table?
It was in my Lake Stevens kokanee 2015 thread that Stealheadin360 reported that "we" were planning on scheduling a round table discussion.
Had not heard any additional information on said round table. I have several issues/concerns that I would love to see discussed.

Lake Stevens round table?
Following the alum treatment of Stevens there was talk of having a Round-Table discussion on the Kokanee Management, treatments, etc. for the lake. Has those discussions occurred? How seen nothing about it and remain very interested in the Stevens kokanee fishery. It remains one of my favorite fishe...

Re: Lake Stevens kokanee -2015
Zach - I'll watch for notification of the round table discussion and would like very much to participate in the discussions. Since the last post I have been out 4 more times and paid careful attention to the size of the fish caught. Fished 3 times by myself and once with a friend. As you pointed out...

Re: Sauger in Samish?
To my knowledge sauger have never been found in Washington. I agree the fish in question sounds like a pike minnow which are common in Samish.

Re: Lake Stevens kokanee -2015
Zack -
Sounds like a good day on Stevens! Good luck with the Skagit sockeye.
I guess it is now official- I'm not much of a kokanee fisher and know little about Stevens and its kokanee and their management. Folks may wish to ignore my previous posts on this thread.

Re: Lake Stevens kokanee -2015
Another update on my favorite kokanee fishery. Fished this morning (6/8) and found that the water temperature at 72 degree - 4 or5 degrees warmer than the end of last week. Given the weather for last few days that warmer water was no surprise. Much like in late May with the warmer water temperature ...

Re: Lake Stevens kokanee -2015
Toni- A brown bullhead while trolling for kokanee can hardly be considered "normal". However that is the second one that I have heard of this year and typically hear of several being caught every year from Stevens. I think in the last decade I have caught two. I suspect that those accidental "cats" ...

Re: Lake Stevens kokanee -2015
The odd-ball season continues on Stevens. After a week of warm weather including a couple days of 80 degree temperatures the lake surface temperature has increased until this morning it was 68 degrees. To my surprise in spite of the increased temperatures the water clarity actually increased since l...

Re: Lake Stevens kokanee -2015
Well another Stevens kokanee derby is in the book and from the reports sounds like another great event. Congrats to all the winners, the organizers, and sponsors! This was year 6 of the derby and it occurs to me that the results would provide some insight into the status of this year's population. W...

Lake Stevens kokanee -2015
With the kokanee derby coming up this Saturday and the previous discussions about the alum treatment early this year I thought some would be interested in my observations about the status of Steven's kokanee this year. Thanks to an exceptional spring biologically the lake is at least a full month ah...

Re: Lake Stevens Alum Treatments
Steelhead360- As you may recall I suggested that a get together would be a good idea a month or so ago but heard nothing. While I know of Lake Stevens (and even bit about its fish and fisheries) clearly that knowledge was not needed to broker a "quick fix". At this point not sure what I can add to t...

Re: Lake Stevens Alum Treatments
I understand the concern if May treatment impacts on the fry plants. Those small fry need find food almost immediately. However there may have been a way around that problem. During the 1980s department of wildlife had success with mid-summer fry plants. The advantage of course is larger fry the dif...

Re: Lake Stevens Alum Treatments
Not sure this early alum treatment is a win for the fishermen; in fact I think it is the exact opposite. In looking at the data from last year it is clear that the chlorophyll started to build this time of year and once the treatment occurred there were depressed levels for about 6 weeks. It is that...

Re: Lake Stevens Alum Treatments
Zack - Getting our information together might be a good idea. I would suggest that we meet face to face to look at the information you have gathered and discuss what might be a good way to proceed forward. Wonder if have a local WDFW bio joining us. Clearly the more information we have at our dispos...

Re: Lake Stevens Alum Treatments
Zack - A huge thank your for bring this to our collective attention and starting a dialogue with the City! I read your email to Mr. Monken with interest. I have a couple of pieces of additional information that maybe of interest in future discussions with the City and WDFW. Kokanee are depend on zoo...

Re: Lake Stevens Alum Treatments
Just learned about this discussion via a PM from another forum (thanks Toni). Without her help I would have never found this thread (it is a bit hidden). I would have like to have contributed earlier. While hardly an expert I do enjoy fishing for the Lake Stevens kokanee and they have provided me wi...
