Not a record but still a super respectable Smallie.

Post by Swizzlestick » Wed Jun 24, 2009 9:05 am

20" 4.5lb Scaled. Probably would have gone over 5 but right as we were netting him he coughed up a 6" trout.

06/25/2009 Edit. A lot of people (below) have asked about where we caught this fish. It's no secret and some people have picked the spot. It is the upper end of Long Lake (Spokane River) Below 9 mile dam at the confluence. BTW The poster is not the cat in the picture. But I will let him know you all love his Tats.

That is pretty scenery. I know where it is (I was there last night)and it's no secret but I don't know the rules about these kinds of things and some of you guys are so freakin sensitive. The guy is from Spokane....that should help a little.

Unfortunately for me, I've never had the pleasure of fishing anything further east than Lake Roosevelt in this state, so if it's Long Lake, I couldn't tell from the pic....just guessing since I know that's your stompin' ground DC!. :) Anyways, no problem, I don't want to pressure anyone to reveal a honey hole. That fish is definitely from Long or as some of you transplants insist on calling it Lake Spokane. I wasn't trying to keep any secrets and that lake is by no means a secret. I just remember some guys freaking out about naming a location as if it were some mystery. I don't know the guy holding the fish but it is a nice fish. I'm sure I will run into him at some point. If I do I am going to make fun of his tats in a way that he barely understands and tell him my name is Swede and drive off.
Just kidding.

Long Lake has been on my list of lakes to fish for a while, but honestly I only knew they had really big largemouth, didn't know about the smallies, and had no idea it was so scenic looking. Now I really want to make it a point to get over there and check it out sometime!

Maybe Long is a bigger mystery than I thought and I should shut my pie hole. It is a fairly big reservoir. It is around 20 miles long from dam to dam. It never gets super wide but it is absolutely beautiful from a bass fisherman's perspective. There are a lot of people who say they won't fish it because it is contaminated. I would like to know of a lake below 5,000 feet of elevation that isn't contaminated. Personally I think those guys are using that as an excuse not to fish it because they don't know how and it's easier to figure out some little lake where the fish have no place to hide. The SM fishing is better than the LM fishing as far as numbers of fish. It is also getting right up there as far as size goes. I may be way off base with this but I want to say that the SM were only introduced as recent as 20 years ago. You guys all know how long it takes for a SM to grow. I think that is the reason it doesn't get as much fame for it's SM population. They had not reached their maximum potential until the last 5 years or so. In the spring when all bass are dumb I catch lots of 4's and I caught a few 5's this year as well. One of my buddies weighed a 6.3 in a tournament we had in May. The host of Columbia Country caught a 6lb 11 oz SM 2 years ago in the spring. You could just as easily weigh a 20 lb. bag of SM as you could LM. I love the place and fish it all the time because it is so close to my house and it is big enough that you never feel like you are fishing for pets. That is if you spend time exploring and don't just fish the same stuff all the time.
