jens wrote:Ok, true story. I fished with some of the normal posse 4/24/10 Saturday on the Cowlitz. Great day with the fellas. Fishinrob and I had the hot rod all morning. He already had his limit by the time I got my first. The second fish has been haunting me. :bounce: :bounce:

I was in a nice little battle with what I thought was a superchrome Steelie. It fought like a double digit fish and even took me about 20 yards downriver. I finally beached it, told myself it was on the smaller side of being under 8 lbs so I made the decision to let it go and only wanted to keep any fish over 10lbs. I took a quick picture of it because it was so bright. When I released it, what kept playing in the back of my mind was the mouth was all black. What the? I got back in line and told everyone what just happened. "Hey do Steelhead have black mouths?" I asked. #-o

If someone can please show me proof that a Steelhead has blackmouths, then I won't feel like an idiot for releasing my first ever SPRINGER!!!!

I feel good for catching one, but sure would have liked to have taken it home with me. I have yet to eat one...:chef:
It's alright bro, don't sweat it. There's plenty more where that one came from. You'll get another one soon with all the time you're puttin' in. Nice job of gettin' the quick pic too. At least no one can say you didn't catch him!

Its not the fact that he didn't keep it. Its why he didn't keep it that blows my mind. Hey guys I got a super chrome steelie but it was small.I let it go. Oh by the way how many times you catch blackmouth steelies? That's what blows myy mind. I hope I get to fish with ya many more times throughout the years jensen. But man we need to find ya a book. How to identify your fish by if its got a black mouth its not a steelie. Lol. This one won't be let down. **** I bet kinghunter woulda known. Lol
More fish please!

I have a lot of fish in my freezer and I have been picky on which fishy comes home or swims away. I released a much bigger buck earlier in the morning, dark, so released. Then I caught this beauty, small, so released. An hour later Pooh, if you remember right, I caught that gorgeous hen while you guys were on the bank exchanging recipes for chicken and deviled eggs. MUAH!! I'd be careful using what's his name on here...fyi :-$

Side note: I fished this morning and caught a super chrome summer run buck about 10lbs, only fella on the river to get one. Pic up soon on my FB fellas. :cyclopsan :bounce:

No Luck :( Had a lot of fun though. Started by the boat launch walking down towards the right by the over hanging trees in the bend. Fished there for about an hour and a half. Tried different methods, drifting, bobbin and weavin, hookin and jabbin — nothing. Had fun with an otter, fed him some sand shrimp. We talked about our lives, how he loves eating small crustaceans and swimming etc. I bid him farewell and headed up river towards the dam. Two fellas at the boat launch said all the action was at the dam, so there I went.

Got up to the dam and felt the energy in the air as I saw hundreds upon hundreds of baby springers jumping all over the place. There were several anglers in various camouflage gitty ups. So I moved in and watched for a bit. Witnessed many LARGE Springers jumping all over. I knew I was in the right place.

I tested my luck with my first cast resulting in hooking up into one of those babies. So I tried again, and the second cast - same thing, another baby. And so set the course of my day. Baby after baby. If I were fishing a lake, I would have had a record day. No one else was hooking into these babies, only me :(

Again I tried everything, driftin, bobbin and weavin, hookin and jabbin. Nothing. Felt the "bite" many time, tried setting the hook many times, but to no avail - nothing. In all the bad weather and it's glory, I tried my best and left with confidence that one day I will be as good as our good buddy Jens :)

I laughed I cried, I shouted to the heavens, but at the end of the day I came home to my happy family and set my plans for the next time I will venture down to the Cow.

Tight Lines Homiez!

That area you fished up there is very hard. I hope you seen what the locals were using to catch them with. Not to mention they all have very good cured up eggs. We have been doing our homework, hope to have one here soon and it won't be one that I will let go either#-o . :chef: :nemo:

Yeah, my problem was the eggs. I didn't have any. All I had was EZ Eggs that I had from trout fishing last week. These guys had huge globs of cured eggs dripping with sauce. One guy casted all the way out to the base of the dam (many were) and BAM! Like lightning he hooked into a huge springer. I'm not giving up though, I know time is short, so I have to get down there soon. I had never been to that portion of the river, so next time I will be prepared.

Don't you have a friend with a sled? If so, head over to the island. If you noticed all the guys on the side you were fishing were casting right in that channel. I have yet to fish that side, but hopefully soon. They catch more over there. Time to start hunting kings :-$ . Muah :-$

Yeah I have a friend with a drift boat. I saw two guys fishing that spot yesterday and hooking into some right there. I was trying to figuyre out a way to get there and away from all the lokes. I'm gonna try again next monday, but this time with a boat, and some eggs. Do you think the springers will still be in?

That's odd. There was a member on here who got a ticket for casting towards that way..There is a deadline and you are not allowed to cast over this "line". Surprised no one got any tickets.

Yeah, when I was there everyone who could cast that way did. No one said anything. Now me being new didnt know anything about "the line" and so I moved closer to the dam and was doing what everyone else was doing and all of a sudden I hear this voice yelling at me for fishing over the line. So I apologized and moved over. They should move the signs down towards the water so you can properly see where you are not supposed to fish. I came in from down river so right off I didnt see any warning signs. Shoot if I were a bear, I'd be in the water.
