Anyone tried making their own dough bait for trout and able to get it to be bouyant without using the Bite On Bouyancy product? I was curious if self-rising dough would work to make it float.

I ran a few experiments and haven't been successful yet. I've got a jar of marshmallow fluff in my pantry, but haven't tested that yet...that's gonna be my last try.

Makes me think twice about using power bait dough...they use petroleum based polymers to make their dough float.

you'd be amazed at how many petroleum derived products humans put in their food and on their skin. I cant imagine there would be much of a biologic impact to the fish, or the environment and still be allowed for it to be sold...considering lead weights and shot can still be used.

Yeah, I am in sales...in the chemical industry. LOL May not be much of an impact per angler...but you add all of those "negligible" impacts together and there is going to be an impact...even if it's years, or decades down the road. I'm switching back into salmon mode, so I'm not actively pursuing my floating dough experiments...but when I decide to play with it again, I'm going to try mixing marshmallow fluff into the dough mixture.

We are slowly killing everything, including ourselves...but keep buying it! I need to sell those raw materials to the manufacturers! LOL

I don't use trout dough. A plain white marshmellow works just fine for floating whatever natural bait I use. If you use worms, you can pump them full of air to make them float on their own.

Just get some little marshmallows put them in a small jar and smash up some garlic and put it in the jar with a little water and let it sit for a week and it has a sent and it floats. You can also add food coloring. Another good way is to put some smashed garlic into a container of worms a couple of days before you go and either use marshmallows or put air in it to make it float.

It still works by its self. Run a power bait rig with 2 to 3 foot leader with a circle hook. The work kind of like the power eggs.

that is kinda how I fish Williams Lake, cept I use a size 12 treble hook

I've tried making other trout dough baits but they either don't turn out right or don't catch fish. The marshmallows wort to float a worm or like powerbait.
