If anything, try shallow, even long lining. That's the pattern for early Lake Stevens kokanee.

I did, not bits. no luck

6 am until almost 11am.

Trolling pretty deep for the most time.

Meet someone on my way out, that was just lunching and said that at this time you could mostly jig them, on the surface.

So nothing for me, did not fish much on the surface.

The early season kokanee fishery on Lake Stevens is a surface show. Flat lined gear (no weight) 40-60' behind the boat is all it takes.

For those little buggers the first thing I do is make my leaders a little longer, around 18 inches versus the 10-12" for April/May. I also like to use bait scents (Krill, Herring, Shrimp) and tend to shy away from Garlic and Anise. But the biggest trick is getting your gear away from the boat. Boats are noisy. Sonar clicks, kicker motor, and music can cause the fish to shy away from the boat so having your gear a long ways back can really help out during the early spring. One weapon I like to utilize is the Macks Double D dodger in the small size. I fish a 1/4 oz of weight in front of it to keep 5 feet or so behind the surface and fish it 100 feet behind the boat. At that distance my presentation is about 30 feet off the side of my boat so I dont recommend doing this with to many other boats around. But it is very effective.
