They buried this, sports fishing specific, proposed legislation, in preexisting legislation that targets mostly thermostats. Go figure, I just left the HVAC field and it's popping up to haunt me in my favorite activity. The irony is not lost on me.
Thanks for the humor Anglin and Sick! I really needed that today.
There are lots of fellow fishermen that would appreciate it if they could buy and use lead fishing gear for years to come. Would you like to help us out? If not, I understand. If you make the call to oppose 2241, I Thank You.

This topic sure has pushed some peoples button. It does show that people from all sides of the political coin dcan have something in common and that is fishing. Thanx for the link MarkFromSea, I will contact my reps today to try to stop HB2241....

I don't know if Sick would agree, but your welcome for the humor. Personally, I think it was worth it.

I just got word that the proposed ban on lead fishing tackle is off the table in Washington State.

I pour my own jig heads and the cost savings is significant. A high-quality jig sells for at least $2 and many are closer to five bucks.
I can make them for about 25 cents.
In most situations, if you fish where the fish are, you'll lose a lot of tackle. If you're forced to use tungsten jigs, it adds up fast.

That was only part of the problem. Tungsten melts at 6192 degrees F., if it is very pure, even higher if it is not pure. There are tungsten alloys that melt lower, but this adds to the cost.
In short, to mold tungsten, you would not be doing it at home, or most factories, and only ceramic molds could withstand the temperature. That is the reason light bulbs use it, it won't melt. Bulbs burn out when oxygen allows the tungsten to burn, so now you need to melt the tungsten in an oxygen free atmosphere.
Tin can be molded easy, even easier then lead, but it is so light as to be almost useless in fast or deep water.
Bismuth has a very low heat conductivity, meaning it is a great insulator. It takes a slow heat to melt it. It melts at 521 degrees F, but good luck finding a reasonable source for it. It is also very expensive.
All of the cost could be justified, if there was any scientific justification for the ban. As said before, the law was a feel good law, without any scientific justification at all.
Still, there are those that support the ban. My goal was to tell people that it was being proposed and to get them to call their reps. They did, and for now, the proposed ban is dropped.

Re: We knew it was coming, Washington State lead ban for fis
GREAT news, thanks!
I was at Outdoor Emporium today, only saw tungsten(?) slip sinkers(about $2 a sinker) in non-lead weights. I asked if they had any non-lead split shot sinkers, the guy looked at me like I was smokin crack......... LMAO Thank God it failed this go round! I'll use a 3/8ths nut for Pierre if I make it over this year.......

That is good news. We still need to watch them as they have a nasty habit of sneaking things in to other bills. Thanx for your efforts and explanations Anglinarcher.
