CAVITATION ISSUE

Post by wdavis10 » Sun Nov 27, 2011 2:03 pm

A couple months ago I posted an issue with my suzuki 6 horse slipping in
gear when the throttle was in go fast mode. This is my slow time so took it to the shop for new cable for the boat and the slipping issue - glad I did as there was a leak which is now fixed around water pump(3 broken bolts) the shop said that could have been the reason for the slip as there are only 4 bolts holding all this together. They took it out for a test and alas the same issue!!! We are talking about a Valco Westcoaster 16', 110 horse jet and the 6horse kicker. Well. would you believe the water line on the hull shows where it sits dead drift "but" this boat has a pointed nose and a very flat bottom and comes quite a bit out of the water even at slow speeds. I'm finding out that this is a light weight boat and it "walks on water" so when the kicker starts pushin it walks up and starts gettin air. I've seen a few boats out there with a drop plate off the back of thier boat that can be lowerd and then raised for "go fast" Do you foks know who makes or sells these puppies? This 6 horse really pushes good out at american or the cow but could use more and the only way I know of is the drop plate - I'd appreciate any other ideas as well!!!! :-s

Im not 100% what your looking for. Are you refering to a trolling plate?

A longer shaft on the kicker would probably solve the issue also.

thanks for the info but not what I'm looking for rich. What I'm looking for is attatched to the transom and you put your motor on it. You can then lower this unit into the water manually to put the prop lower in the water. You can raise it when you are shooting the rapids. I thought about long shaft but think the bracket I'm looking for would be a lil cheaper fix

It sounds to me like you're needing one of these:

thanks for the info that is sort of what I saw and will keep that site in mind. The one I'm looking for has a handle to raise and lower the motor - a lil more old man friendly and probably more cost!! Maybe I'm just wishin but with a bad back I would not be able to lift the motor w/out a lil leverage.

I have one similar to the one BigD posted the link for. Mine are spring loaded and its pretty effortless to raise and lower. I have a 15 hp on mine.

Here is a pic of the 15 hp on the Bayliner 2350. The kicker mount has 4 heafty springs. The issue, you have to lean over the transom to deal with it. But the springs help.

I'd be interested in knowing what you find out for a unit that has an additional lever/handle that you were referencing.

These guys have hydraulic and manual kicker brackets. Not cheap but if it saves your back well worth it. Works like a bottle jack, cost is about $1200 but you might find it cheaper. Looks top shelf to me

In a side note, my dad had a mount on his old bayliner that had some kind of gas charged spring shock that worked well. I could raise the old 7.5 honda 4 stroke when I was 7 years old. Were talking about a mount made 30 years ago. All I remember was that it was white and had a red selector handle for up and down on the top of the upper arm.

No holds barred, this is by far the best kicker bracket you can buy. Very well tested and it won't break.

You won't be sorry! No bending over and if the kicker has electric start.... well you get the idea. No need to work while boating.

Since my first post I have found a garlic 71090 4 stroke bracket. I might have to go this way and fab my own handle out of aluminum. Problem is it is for 7 1/2 to 30 hp so might be using said handle to push down as well. Still searching, the one I saw was red(ugly red) and going to fast on a trailer to get any info. Color is of no import, workability is the issue. Sarting to think this was a homemade unit???? :salut:

The "Garelick" kicker bracket you've found is a well respected unit. Please be advised that nearly all (Garelick included) kicker bracket manufactures Insist on having the motors removed before trailering. There is too much movement in the bracket and it will damage the kicker.

Since last post I've been in touch with garvin co, They do not make a trailerable drop unit but did suggest a serial number that could be adapted(your on your own here) it's for a two stroke. I will continue to search about and in the mean time 1/2 throttle it will have to be. That lil suzuki runs forever on a gal and was just hoping for more. Some times being in a hurry causes a body to miss out on things so..............
As far as a drawing? no, It was on a pretty nice looking unit so he may have made it himself. It looked like the garmin w/ a red handle attatched so one could lower and lift w/ leverage, perfect for those bad back folks - the search goes on!!!
