Mercury Outboard squeal

Post by spindog » Sun May 20, 2012 1:00 pm

I have a 2000 50HP 2 stroke which occasionally develops a low emitting intermittent squealing noise at low rpm?
The noise is a cross between a chirping bird and a car belt slipping, but not very loud.

This squealing noise happens when in gear, if I change into neutral or change rpm it goes away, hadn't heard it in
a couple months, the noise is back. Can't tell if its in the power head or from below the power head?

Besides the obvious- an authorized Mercury mechanic.
Anyone experience this issue or know what is failing?

Pretty sure this is normal. If I remember correctly, my previous Merc 15HP motor did this and my current Merc 60 does this.

My 40 4-stroke does the same - I have isolated it to the upper(below the powerhead) driveshaft bushing. Pulled it apart and greased the bushing, has been quiet so far. Found it by spraying wd-40 up the shaft.

rpm- when you say "pulled it apart" and greased the bushing. What or how do you get to the bushing? Did you have to pull
the power head to accomplish this?
