salmon in the sound?
so when do the kings and silvers start running through the sound? and until when? like dash point and les davis area? i seem to forget every year and i probably should write this down haha.
Re: salmon in the sound?
A11 has been open since June 11 and people (definitely not me) have been catching since then. Basically everywhere else opens tomorrow.
The fish are there and so far it seams like a steady flow vs. major numbers. Crab season opens Thursday, so we'll see how it looks after the holiday weekend. We're off to Westport though...

Re: salmon in the sound?
thanks!! im planning on throwing some cut plug herring and brads cut plugs and just wanted to see if it was worth giving a shot now. definitely gonna have to get out this week!
Re: salmon in the sound?
their are kings in the sound year long. don't see many from piers though until at least July. their might be some silvers show up towards the end of the month. haven't seen any come into pt. defiance yet.
Re: salmon in the sound?
I need to join you this year Obryan...let me know if you're open to it. Anyone ever rented a skiff and trolled the shoreline pulling plugs?
Re: salmon in the sound?
I have had my own boat for a long time but years ago I would rent a boat at pt Defiance and we would mooch for kings. Did ok back then. I think they came with a 10 hp so pulling a plug should work or using a diver or clamp on down rigger.
Re: salmon in the sound?
sounds good. I have m own boat. I sometimes troll plugs but I've mostly been using spoons the last couple years. some of the plug guys do well though.mizm05 wrote:I need to join you this year Obryan...let me know if you're open to it. Re: salmon in the sound?
Nice, I've got some sweet Silver Horde glow spoons in King and Coho colors. Might give them a shot if I ever get out on a boat this summer.
Re: salmon in the sound?
If you know where to find them they are there. Watch out for seals stealing them when you hook 'em and are trying to bring them in.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Re: salmon in the sound?
Fished today in my friends boat on Rosario Straight. He lives in Mt. Vernon. Launched at Washington Park. Pretty much got blown off the water at 11AM. Fished Tide Point and Eagle Bluff. Nothing happening but it was too windy to fish where and how we wanted to. Try it again there next week.
Re: salmon in the sound?
i know they are always somewhere in the area, but i suppose what i mean is, when are the good times for kings and silvers, from dock, in dash point/browns point and les davis lol
Re: salmon in the sound?
When you see that boats (in those areas)are catching Kings in summer you have a chance to catch salmon off those docks. My brother caught a 7 pound king off Pt. Defiance dock in July a few years ago. I caught a 19 pound king off Les Davis in Sept years ago. My brother likes Pt Def. dock whereas I liked Les Davis.goonatic wrote:i know they are always somewhere in the area, but i suppose what i mean is, when are the good times for kings and silvers, from dock, in dash point/browns point and les davis lol
I have seen kings caught off Dash Point while crabbing. In 2013 a big salmon (king or silver) was caught off the front of the Dash Point dock while jigging for pinks. I think it may have been a king because it was bigger than the crab net ring they were trying to net it with. It got away. Dash Point have seals ready to steal the fish.
I think there are a few now and in Aug-Sept there are more. But the best way is to go and find out. There are people who frequent those docks. Some who will talk with you.

Re: salmon in the sound?
A tip for dock fishing that has worked at all docks in the Tacoma area
Cut plug herring behind as big of banana weight your rod can handle (to get out farther).
Be sure you got a nice tight spin, cast as far as you can, leave the bail open so that the your weight hits the bottom as far out as it can (if you stop your line from spooling out, the weight will come in and your retrieve will be short). Tighten your line with a quick jerk to get the weigh tof the bottom and get the cut plug spinning while you reel it in, and reel in just fast enough to keep the plug spinning.
Works great for getting them kings while fishing the pier's.
My biggest one using this method is 28lbs, off of Les Davis fishing pier (some years ago)

Re: salmon in the sound?
Lots of good advise here!
How do you land them if you are on a dock?

Re: salmon in the sound?
pt. defiance has a very long handled net. seen people use crab traps as nets at les davis and old town when you could fish there.
Re: salmon in the sound?
In the 80's we used bike rims with netting tied on. Now we have used crab nets that are used just for netting fish. But last year at Dash Point during pink run they hooked one off the front of the dock that was too big to get in the crab net.

Re: salmon in the sound?
hooked a few kings on the north tip of vashon a few weeks back- 2 wild and one keeper. been fishing area 10 and hooked up a few times but nothing to the boat yet. Going to try the inlet and possession this sat ive heard they fishign is better up north
Re: salmon in the sound?
So if you have a big one on...can you play it out and then walk it in toward shore along the pier? Will people actually bring their lines in if you call it out that you are going to walk it down?
Re: salmon in the sound?
It you don't have a net usually people are willing to help. Or you reel in as much as you can lift and flip lol not as crazy as it sounds very common especially with pinks
