Buzz Bomb Squid Jig

Anyone know if it is legal to turn a buzz bomb into a squid jig. Would be using a barbless treble hook with the points bent out a bit. Planning on going tonight and don't have time to buy a new jig or find where the heck my jigs are...

I dont know if a Buzz Bomb would work so well with a treble hook. I used to make my jigs using squid jigging hooks which are a multi pointed hook w/o barbs. I used steelhead or river weights (pencil lead) . It seemed to drop better then the fluttering of a buzzbomb. Id be interested to know how it works. Using a treble seems like you were targeting more then squid. Id say at least pinch the barbs so if you catch a shaker it could be released unharmed. Good Luck..

Thanks. I've had some buddies catch squid on buzz bombs before, that's why I'm leaning that way. Good idea on the pencil lead, would just need to paint it a squiddy color ;)

There are a lot better lures for squid than a buzz bomb. Make your own as stated above.

Another idea is to take a couple bullet sinkers and place them end-to-end like a torpedo shape. Then paint them with glow paint. You can get creative too with glow beads and egg/bullet sinkers painted with glow paint. You can get the glow paint from craft stores. You should buy the squid hooks rather than using trebles. If you want to make your own squid hooks, you can take a bunch of clothes pins and bend them into shape and bond them together at a center point. A lot of work though.

I make all of my own jigs.

Ended up not using the buzz bomb. Found a tackle shop on the way that sold one like this. Only caught two squid, while most everyone else was slamming them. Time for a new jig.

yeah you want to use 3 or 4 jigs (which ever is legal) witha wieghted one on the bottom but use the smaller one with eyes in clear, pink and orange have worked best for me, green is good too.
Anyone here squid at illahee in bremerton?

As another FYI. You can lose lots of jigs if they are near the bottom. So when jigging deep I use a small split shot on 2-4 lb test line as a bottom protcector. I use a 2' leader for this. Better lose a weight then a $5.00 jig.

probably a fluke but a friend caught 3 squid recently jigging a pt. wilson dart for blackmouth near the slag pile in tacoma. he had a single hook on of course.

Last year at Myrtle Edwards Park I hooked a Blackmouth on a squid jig. I tried hoisting him up but it fell off. Like you said its a fluke but still fun.

That happens sometimes at illahee, never seen it but have heard of them hooking salmon out there jigging.

I used to squid out at Illahee until I moved over to the dry side. Don't really get the chance to do it when I visit the parents over in Bremerton.

oh yeah I can be good if you can get a good spot, I have tried brownsville before since I live near it but you need your own light and special adapter, not very good though but I have seen salmon jumping out there before during squiding so that was a plus.

And i pulled 3 squid up at once, one of them squirted there ink and it hit the old dude in the back of the head. Funniest thing ever! hahaha

are you guys talking about the state park where you have to drive down a really steep and long hill and park by a bathroom and you walk on to a dock like brownsville or the public pier where you park on a steep hill and walk on to a pier and squid under 2 huge lights cause that is where I go.

i dont buy the squid jigs that are shown in the pic above, the "hooks" dont stick out enough and seem useless, i like the ones that i buy in some korean markets with the hooks that stick far away from the body, theyre pricey but they work =D and so does a strong light source

I've done most of my squid fishing at the public pier at Illahee then we'd go once in awhile at Brownsville. I thought they had the State Park locked up during the nights now?
