Northwest Fishing Reports

Now I've been doing some research on mooching technique and gear required. What I really want to know before I go buying a decent salmon poll and a level wind reel, is there anybody out there that has fairly regular success mooching for salmon.

And since I live in Bremerton and hood canal's 4 salmon limit looks very tempting, are there spots that typically see salmon bunched up? I don't need or want your secret hidey hole, I'm just a fresh water guy trying to break into the saltwater world.

The salmon stack up at ball point on the canal. I am friends with a guy that strictly mooches. He catchs lots of fish every year, he goes off of defiance and rigs his herring backwards.

Mooching works alright as long as there aren't too many dogfish around, which is often the case. Another technique you might consider is jigging. Jigging can be very effective as long as the tidal current isn't too strong. I have a friend who lives in Tacoma, and he jigs and mooches exclusively around the clay banks area as well as pt. dalco and does very well. By utilizing both techniques you can fish pretty effectively under most conditions.

I have a 11 foot zodiac. I used pvc and built a platform that sits on the tubes for a downrigger mount. works quite well and I have caught plenty of salmon this way. also there is a youtube video of a guy using an inflatable up in sekiu.
