Hi all,

I'm boating from lake wa through Ballard locks and into the sound tomorrow. Was thinking of doing some crabbing and fishing. Any tips?

Head over to the southern section of Jeffeson Head for resident coho. Most folks target the waters in the 400' to 500' depths but I've found that there are just as many fish to be had in the 200' to 300' slot. Unfortunately this week starts a series of some brutal tide swings that take place during the daylight hours. Crabbing will be tough as when the tide is running during a 10+ foot exchange, your float will go under or your trap will take off for the open sea. You'll have a window from around 8:00am to 10:00am to drop your pots in hopes of picking up a few dungies. I'd give the area just north of Shilshole Bay a shot, which is also another place to try for coho. The coho you would catch right now are on the small side, 2 to 3lb average and can be caught on just about anything trolled 30' to 45' down. The color green is always a good choice for lures and flashers.

hi guys, thanks for the tips. got 5 keeper dungies and 2 smaller sized cohos. It took about an hour to go through the freshwater to the locks but, it was a beautiful days...

oh, I fished with a flasher, green squid with skirts, and shrimp smelly jelly on the hooks and flourocarbon leader.

I hope you are joking about the dungies since it was closed to crabbing.

ah sorry, no i should have clarified, we didn't use pots and one of my buddies was using a crab snare to goof off. i just meant they were keeper sized..plus, according to the biotoxin report, i don't think i would want to eat a crab from marine 10 anyway

also, the cohos were too small to keep

If your buddy got caught he would have got a ticket

hlindsay, ah got it. Sorry, this was the first time we were out and were a bit giddy to try all the equipment we had on the boat. Thanks for the feedback guys

Where you were fishing there were no size restrctions for coho, those 18" to 20" fish are good eating and par for the course this time of the season.

I didn't mean to come down hard on you. I thought you might have been thinking if it wasn't a pot it was ok. I have been in places that I found out after they were closed and was glad I didn't get caught. And I have made mistakes that cost me a lot. Like leaving my fishing license in my truck when I was in the boat. I have learned to try and read the regs thru and double check myself.
