Tahsis Derby 2014

After a long summer season on Vancouver Island, the season came to an end with the Tahsis Salmon Enhancement Derby. With around 250 people entering, the Marina usually raises over $30,000 during derby days to donate to Salmon Enhancement projects in Esperanza and Nootka Sounds. For example, the Tahsis river that runs through town, when the hatchery/enhancement project started there were 6 adult chinook recorded returning to spawn. Thanks to this derby and the money it raises, they have now over 1000 spawning adult chinook in the Tahsis river each fall. Awesome numbers! Washington could learn a lesson from how Canada manages situations like these....
Anyway, ive been fishing the derby for over ten years. I have placed many times, got second with a 35.5lb chinook 2 years ago. This year, in the last hour of the last day, we landed a 39.25 lb chinook and took first place by over 12 pounds. That same day we landed a 14 lb coho and ended up winning biggest coho and chinook out of 250 people. Won 2 brand new scotty downriggers, and scotty pot puller, and some other things. Another great season on the Island... Time to switch to fall salmon! I should have a video from the salt soon!
