In the pictures they look very similar. In your hand they're quite different. Whitefish have a very small mouth compared to the Pikeminnow as well as other subtle differing characteristics. If I remember right, the Whitefish are also typically more of a silver color with brass/bronze highlights vs. Pikeminnow that are more of a dirty yellow.

The Whitefish pic looks a little more like a White Bass.

Anything is possible, it's a picture from one of the web pages about whitefish, so I don't really know.

Ok, there are 2 pictures, mountain white fish and lake white fish. 1/2 way down the page;

put your curser over the pictures and a panel will show up with what the fish is.

I got it, did a search for Banks Lake white fish. lol

https://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=At ... t-901&fp=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

there are a couple pictures. One is of a bunch of fish laying there, and one is titled 'four men convicted of illegally taking fish from Banks Lake'

But then there is one picture labeled 'Banks Lake Walleye' but it's a big Smallmouth. [laugh]

I guess I am not the only one who has a hard time distinguishing these fish, since I have not knowingly caught either before. Any thoughts on this fish caught at barrier dam?

That's a pike minnow,it has more like a bass type mouth when white fish have a small mouth and tend to be more silver.

they both swim in the river i fish most and both hit the mepps i toss for cutts. whitefish taste pretty good, especially smoked. pike minnow, not so tasty. haven't tried the suckers but heard they are decent.

the pike minnow are a blast to fish for, pound for pound they beat cutts to shame when comes to fight and how hard they slam the fly. since people don't eat them i can find a lot bigger ones in the Seattle area. I have giant hands and couldnt get them all the way around this guy.
