Re: fungi
The first good rain we had a couple weeks ago really gave them a good start the season. We did pretty well ourselves the past couple of weeks.

Re: fungi
so this is "Sis" the wonder dog !!! .. lol not really she's a dork and a pain .... she's wayyyy too smart, energetic, enthusiastic, orrr maybe i'm just too old to raise kids !!! ...
in the pic she is lay'n on my bed !! .. and we're discussing the fact that it's about the 3rd or 4th time she had been a "BAD GIRL" that morning allllready !!! and should i go get the "buzzer" and hurt her ???!!! lol look in those eyes ... look at the knowing and the defiance ... she's a bi#@* ..
... lol and that's the prob ... i only have male dogs and the old dogs are hard core cattle dogs ... 90% of my "training" is i'm the alpha !!! .. and i'm used to give'n one a knuckle on the head or a good a#* chew'n atleast a 1/2 doz times a day or i start check'n to see if theyre sick ... bull headed old (edited) ...
.... well she's 1/2 Heeler and 1/2 Bearded Collie ... she's 9 months old and 45 lbs ... the beardy part of her means that she's super sensitive ... you cant raise your hand to 'em not even a rolled up paper ... they'll just turn into a cower'n puddle of jello and be ruined ... even potty training was tramatic .. only did the rub the nose thing a couple of times and after that just carry'n her in and put'n her next to a puddle and chew'n her out would get her tremble'n !!! ... <rolls eyes> ... thank G*# she learned that leason quickly and well ... lol maybe too well ... she's has allways used her paws a LOT ... like a cat ... the way she wakes me up for her 3am pee is ... she slides up on the edge of the bed and puts her size 6 paw on my mouth over and over till my eyes open ... then she smiles 'n says woof in her veryyyy deep voice ... lol how do you not smile bk and say yes dear and get up eh ....
.... when she was about 5 mths old i called her up on the bed and made her lay next to me ... i lay'd what ever it was that she had chewed up on the bed in front of her and we were discussing it .... about the 3rd time i asked her why she was bad she cocked her head and reached out and put her foot on my mouth and held it there !!! ... when she moved it i started to ask her if that was meant to tell me something ... and she cut me off and stuck her paw bk on my mouth .. lolol and when i looked in her eyes i KNEW ... she's a bi@#*...
... and that's how she's being trained ... most hunt'n dogs point 'n flush and all that cool stuff ... my hunt'n dog is going to wave !!! .... that's right ... i cast her out (down the hill lol) and i'll work her use'n a whistle a collar and a buncha yell'n .... and when she finds something she's going to sit down and wave !!! ... it's all the same dumb game we've been play'n the whole time she's known me ... only different ....
... the tiny chunck of truffle that i bought was vacume packed and flash frozen shortly after picking/cleaning and was shipped on dry ice and cost $56 plus shipping for a piece the size of a small walnut !! the chantrelle ? bait we just picked a while bk and the grouse bait was made from a stick the wings and tail of my 1ST grouse this season and some 30 lb test mono ....
... the shroom hunting we give her the scent and then cast her out to "LOOK" the grouse we just randomly hide without tell'n her it's there ... she's about 1/2 got it and loves to "play" ... the one prob i see come'n is the first time she trys to walk up and sit next to old mr ruff and wave !!! ... lol that first explosion should be something to watch ... she'll be great for find'n downed birds in the brush tho ...
.... now dont laugh at her hairdo in the pic !!! lolol one day we were having a convo about how fuggly she was and next thing ya know the clippers were a buz'n lol ... if ya count bk she was a winter puppy and raised outside ... had a heck of a coat when i got her ... then she try'd to shed her fuzz and grow some real hair but the spring weather got hot then wet 'n cold 'n hot ... so she ended up with about 5 diff lengths of hair lolol ... she ended up with 3/8 of a inch all over and a tasle on her tail when i was done lol .... no boots, no beard, no ear muffs, no brows to peak out from under !!!! ... that was about 4 months ago .... you'll have to goog Bearded Collie if ya dont know what they look like ...
.. so that's the beginning of the saga ... stay tuned .. i'm busy as heck right now but am die'n to get bk out there ... and after all this fall stuff is over it'll be time for truffles .... DOG

Re: fungi
as far as the shrooms in a bag goes .. yep plastic ... i'm be'n green lololol .... we re use 'em once and then use 'em again for trash can linners ... as far as the shrooms go they dont care ... i've heard the whole carry 'em in a basket spread the spore wives tale too ... i'm on the westside 'n it rains ... try'n to carry that pile of chantrelles (over 15 lbs) in the off and on drizzle in paper would have been an adventure lolol ...
... nope them bags fold/smash up so thin i can stick a 1/2 doz in a pocket of my vest without too much of a buldge ... and are just as likely to be carry'n out some poor creature's heart or liver or late berries or grouse breasts ect .... i've even been known to pack out other peoples garbage in 'em !!!! ....
... shroomers are like some fisherman secretive about their spots and stuff ... but here's a lil somethin somethin ....
... a few years ago i started make'n a effort to play Johnny mushroom seed ... and last year (the 1ST season of the old lady's retirement) the wife and i made a point of "seeding" every area we could find that looked right but didnt have any shrooms ...
.. we took/picked every shroom we found that was over ripe or frost bit ect and tossed 'em into a ajoining patch of brush that looked prime but had never had any shrooms !!! ... no big deal just a toss over the shoulder or under arm down the hill or what ever ...
... well it's early and time will tell better but i swear i saw production in areas we "seeded" over the last few years that had never had any before ... stay tuned .... DOG

Re: fungi
so the weather has been perfect for shrooms ... but i've been busy with a logging/clearing project and in a race to get everything cleaned up and either covered up with wood chips or hydro seeded ... havent been able to get away aarrgggg ...
but good news is the old woman retired again !! and demanded we hit the woods ... and oh maannn am i glad we did ... the shrooms we found were large and "dry" ... almost leathery feeling ... and firm ... nicest 1S i've picked in years ... even found a little bonus !!! .....
i'm old and puter tupid so i'll load pics the old way ... you'll have to scroll down if you want to follow along ... sry
the bonus came clear up at the top of the hill where the chantrelles were starting to play out and as we were circle'n around to drop down and work the side hill bk to the truck ... it's the same place i found over 10 lbs within about 10 ft a few years bk ... but i havent seen it since ... well she let out a squeal and was jumping up and down tell'n me to hurry !!!! lolol guess she thought it was going to get away ... always great for the newbe to find these lil jewels ... (see pic) 1.5 lb'r
another big prize came when we found shrooms growing in areas where we play'd johnny mushroom seed for the last few years !!! IT WORKS !!! (see pics) never seen ANY shrooms in these areas before !!! ...
so as dry as these chatrelles were ... where our last haul was 3 bags not quite full and weighed about 15 lbs ... our 4 bags stuffed full weighed about 19 lbs !!! this trip .... (see pic)
so there were comments about dehydrate'n shrooms and i've try'd it .... YUK ... the whole process YUK !!! ... and i dont think much of 'em when ya rehydrate 'em either .... i've done some in the smoker too ... eh ... my red neck starts show'n when i talk about respect for the fur fish 'n fowl that i kill ... and the way it's cared for on the way to the table ... and it carries over to things like shrooms 'n berries ect ... if you take the kinda poundage out of the woods that i do shroom'n the time involved in clean'n and dehydrate'n would takes dayssss ...
i'll walk/talk you through how we take on a mountain of chantrelles .... 1st in the field we make a effort to clean debree off 'em before we toss them in the bag but not too much of one !!! ... and you can see from the (pics) our bags bring home a lot of the woods lol even some creepy crawlers ... the 1 thing we are careful of is to cut off and toss (play johnny mushroom seed) any rotten bits ...
well at home we start in clean'n and break'n 'em up and pile'n the bits and pieces in a big bowl as prep for .... DRY PAN SAUTE'n !! ..... that's right just my favorite cast iron skillet and a burner on the stove ... no salt no oil no nuthin !!! ...
now the cleaning process at home makes it wayyy easy as apposed to waste'n hourssss in the field be'n TOO meticulous ... holding a parring knife in your hand you grab one and start breaking off bits that are clean and toss'n 'em in the bowl .. a lot of times breaking 'em in 1/2 or 1/4s (when theyre realllyyy big like 4.5 ozs lol ) makes cleaning litter 'n dirt off easier ... scrape'n those stubborn dirty or discolored spots with the tip/edge of the knife is quick and doesnt waste much ... on the "realllly big" 1s the stems can be tough/woody .... so using our method of breaking 'em up it's pretty easy to see where it starts getting woody ... kinda like asparagrass they just break right off where you need to toss the rest .....
so when i have a bowl full i take 'em to the pan ... if you oil your cast iron before you put it away you need to wipe that out good with a paper towel ... if you dont SHAME ON YOU !!! .... i set the burner at about the 1/3 heat setting and set the pan full of shroom bits on it (see pic) ... like i said DRY no nuthin !!! rrrright in the pan ... and there ya go ... i keep 'em at this lower heat and stir often and the water (even these super dry 1s) pours out of 'em (see pic) .... well ya dont want boiled shrooms ... so i turn the heat up on the burner to about 2/3s power ... scrape all the 1/2 cooked shrooms to 1 side of the pan and prop the handle of the pan up so the water runs to the far side of the pan ... and boils (see pic) ..... when about 2/3s of the water cooks off i stir the shrooms bk into it and roll 'em around good with the spoon .... then bk to the side of the pan and tilted and turn the heat bk down ... when that water is reduced by 1/2 i put the pan bk on the burner and stir until the shrooms stop give'n up water and even start to stick a little (see pic) .... poof done turn 'em out in a thin layer and let 'em cool ... ready to bag and freeze .... load up aaaaanother pan lol ... notice in the pic of the finnished product (i usualy vac pac 'em but they keep fine in good ziplocks) ... note how we flat'n 'em out ... this makes 'em easy to store/stack in the freezer ... not only that but when you need some you pull out a bag and break off as much as you want and put the rest bk !!! .... when we start runnig low in our stash we start out with some store bought buttons and add small portion of frozen chantrelles to strech 'em ...
the pic of the 2 plates of finnished product is about 1/2 of the load we brought home ... lol long day i ran out of gas ... so about 10 lbs or so reduced to 2 plates piled full = 8 bags of frozen "MRE's" (mushrooms ready to eat) that weigh about 12oz each !!! .... and take up a area about 8in X 8in X 8in in the freezer !!! ...
try it you'll like it
and if you've never taken advantage of this bounty GET OUT THERE !!! ... you cant really screw up and kill yourself with chantrelles ... they are easy to indentify ... and it's going to be a banner year for 'em ...
a word of caution ... i wear my orange in the woods ... just say'n ... there are "hunters" out there ... and i make sure i KNOW i'm allowed where i'm go'n !!! ... just say'n
... GL 'n YW ... DOG

We got ours up near Snoqualmie area. I hiked so much I sweated so hard. I have no idea where we were. Somewhere near Asahel Curtis area in the forest side. We 4x4 to some spot. I'll find out where we were then print it out.

Re: fungi
After dehydrating our shrooms they really look like we got nothing. I was reading that mushrooms are 90%water.So after dehydrating there isn't many there. My bros went out Sat Night and got more.

Re: fungi
I took my shrooms off the dehydrator yesterday. My 8.5 pounds dried out and fit in a 2 quart jar. They really shrunk up. I read that shrooms are 90% water. Now I need more. Muahaha. Back to our sweet spot. The weather is perfect.
