Its Jamming Time

Post by racfish » Tue Jun 22, 2010 2:38 pm

Last night I did my first 2 batches of fresh strawberry jam.Tonite will be low sugar and sugar free strawberry jam.Local berries are way too expensive so I went for California berries.I saw some local stuff at $4.00 a pint or $48.00 a flat. No way for jam...Regular jam with pectin takes 4 cupe of fruit to 7 cups of sugar.I give those away with a syringe of R insulin.I prefer the low or no sugar jams. Thats where the real berry taste happens.

That is really unfortunate when the foreign product outprices the good, local stuff #-o

This was Saturday in the Port Townsend area that I saw those prices. I seldom by Foriegn produce. I'll buy Ca,Tx,and Fl. stuff. At least its still USA.In a few weeks I'll buy the local berries for my special jams.I'm heading to Camano Fri for a job. I'll look around. In the news they said there are alot of berries just no pickers picking them.I have to say that picking Strawberries is a killa on the back.

Isn't it a bit early for local strawberries? Our strawberries just started producing some editable fruit (oh, and they are tasty). Of course, we don't grow near enough to make jam, but it's fun watching the kids looking for ripe berries and picking and eating them.

This is the height of the best berries of the season. Berries are sweetest now and for a week. After the first picking the berries get better after the 3rd picking the berries look great but offer less taste and sweetness then the previous pick.I'll be on Camano this Saturday and will check it out.I need to check on the launches to see which are gonna be best for crabbing. My strawberry jam is done for now unless I make another batch. Next will be Raspberry jams.

The strawberry festival took place in Marysville last weekend, maybe if you are heading through that area stop by off 4th street, there are tons of stands around there. I think they grow lots of berries in Mville.

Hey Matt!!! Beringer farms main fields are in the Maryville area.Litterally 100's of acres of berries to be had.I will be going through there on Saturday. Im gonna go to Holiday sporting goods ,Sylvana Meats ,Taylor Seafood and Baby Rays Shrimp shack for fresh shrimp. When I go North I do all the stops in one trip. With the price of gas I try to consolidate my trips.

Yay, somehow I forgot about Beringer, haha. I was fishing right next to it about 2 days ago to #-o

Holiday is probly my number 1 tackle shop. Whenever I gotta get my hands on something I can't find anywhere else that's where I will head! IF you're going out to Sylvana grab a couple of they peperoni sticks, they are DELICIOUS! I used to eat a ton of those things growing up, lol.

First Good job SSD.Those ribs like that are what the kids call "The Fire" meaning very good.Sylvana meats gets my business whenever I go north. Holiday sports has knowledgable sales people and willing to help anyway they can. I go there for the customer service if nothing else. The one guy I think Shawn helped me get my first steelie from Bush Point this past winter.Sylvana meats sells alot of Wa State local meat . Mostly St Helens Cattle.
Washington is a great state to discover.I travel the state looking for live butchers and meat shops along with local produce and seafood companies.I like spending my money buying Washington state made or grown stuff. Why support foriegn countries that hate Americans.
