Spoons

Okay I have fished with spoons before but I am looking for a little help. I have only caught trout off spoons before so I would liek someone to give me a little guidence on how to set up my pole for throwing spoons out in the river.

If you have pics of the setup that would be great.

any help would be great, I have a ton of spoons that I really don't use because I am not sure if I am setting them up properly and haven't caught any steelies or slamon off them.

I caught a bunch of pinks off buzzbombs and big kastmasters last fall. Just toss out and reel.

Are you using a spinning reel set up? Are you using mono or braid? The Metal I have caught all came on the bigger size spoons. 3/4oz and 1/2 oz. Trust me I have gone thru many spoons learning how to get the correct wobble that Steel go crazy for. I like to get above a hole and cast somewhat downriver letting the spoon sink slowly close to the bottom while mainting slight pressure with my baitcaster. The take on spoons is one of the most violent takes you will feel. I like using a baitcaster because in the stronger current you can free spool the spoon right into the strike zone.

I use spoons and spinners pretty much in the rivers.For salmon I use spinners and steelhead I use the flat wide hammered spoons.Different waters different approaches to using spoons and spinners.Give an example of where you want to fish and if in Wa State I'll try to give you insight to what to use. I'm fishing teacher so its my opinion you'll get.

Well I will be fishign the Sol Duc on Monday and would liek to give some spoons a little more effort this time. The water should be clear the holes i will be fishing should be between 4 to 8 feet deep. The water isn't slow but will be in some areas but not so slow that it won't cause the spoons or spinner not to spin.

I am using braid got 20lb on there right now and htink I am going to stick with that.

So am I using a leader of mono of a swivel or something along those lines?

In my opinion on a river like that the bottom should be pretty rockey meaning lots of boulders and rocks linning the river. I used to use a spoon called a "Steelie" Its a wide spoon usually hammered and set with a treble. You will need to remove all treble hooks and swap out with single hooks.I used the Steelie cuz they worked well for a cheap spoon.The steelie being wider gave it a great rolling effect. Spoons like Crocodiles and Lil Jewels are more for cast -retrieve more then drifting.If using a swivel ,your line wont twist too bad.The other thing would be to ask a sporting goods store up in the Penninsula area and see what they reccomend. I dont know stores in the Kitsap area very much at all sorry. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.Again these are just my opinions and nothing is for sure.

htere is a out fitters store in Forks but that is about another 20 minute drive from where I plan to be fishing and they won't be open...to far out for me to drive jsut to ask...will look up the number and see if they are willing to help over the phone. Oh and yes verry rocky river.

I recommend the Ace Hardware store, their selection of Spinners/Spoons is by far the most well stocked I have ever seen. My favorite spinner is always sold out at Wholesale or Cabelas, at Ace, they had quite a bit. The fellas inside are very knowlegeble too. We went to famous Bob's Sporting goods and we were really disappointed with what they had to offer.

That is the outfitters store I was talking about......they are jsut located inteh hardware store. great people and great selection.
