Mid Western Favorite-Wild Rice

Post by Marc Martyn » Sun Dec 05, 2010 1:59 pm

I spent my early years in South Dakota. My aunt and uncle lived in Minnesota and would send us wild rice every year. Every big family gathering would have pounds of wild rice. Now that I am out west and they have all passed on, I found an outlet in Minnesota that gathers the natural rice and they ship it out to me. So, now I have it with all of our holiday dinners. You cannot buy good wild rice in the pacific northwest.

If you are from the mid west and are looking for a supplier, these are the people to contact. Be sure to buy the "hand picked" variety. There is a big difference between the cultivated and the hand picked. It's more money but worth it.

Their rice is excellent![thumbsup]

Marc, is this the same outfit that Andrew Zimmern visited during a domestic filming of Bizarre Foods? Sure looks the same, canoes and all for harvesting the rice. I may have to order some up to go along with a plate of smoked trout. Mmm! [thumbsup]

I don't know, I haven't seen the film. Wild rice goes with just about any main dish, game, seafood, poultry and of coarse, trout. It is also excellent in soups. [drool]

Wild rice goes exceptionally well with all our local seafoods too. Beef ,chicken, fish, dosent matter. Wild rice has such a great texture.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

I usually throw in some dried wild mushrooms when cooking wild rice, like chanterelles or morels, they really compliment one another.
