What did I catch?

Post by lskiles » Mon Oct 01, 2007 11:27 pm

I caught this "fish" at Catapillar Island.
I do not know what it is and can not find an identifying picture o the web.

Can anyone tell me what this?

mmm...maybe it is some kind of carp or catfish. I know it sounds goofy, but I really do not know what this is.

Hard to tell from the pic for sure, but it looks like a male kelp greenling. The males are more bluish mottled color and the females are more brownish tan.

It looks alot like a greenling, except you caught it in freshwater. I believe it's just a sculpin, wish I could see the back rays better, though.:-k

Could it be a Burbot (fresh water ling cod). Weird looking either way.

It looks like a greenling. Are you sure this is from freshwater? If so it must be a small burbot...

It's the rare and endangered Lotagnathus sacchostma.

You guys really think that's a burbot? I have never seen one before, but it does look like a freshwater ling. I had no idea they were in the Columbia.

Lewis, do you still have it? If you do, maybe you could run it down to the field office in Vancouver and see what they think it is. :-k

I'm going with Prickly Sculpin, or Mottled Sculpin, or.... some kind of Sculpin.

I did not pull up the fins for the picture, but they looked like the picture at this web site.

Thanks for all the help.
No I do not have the fish to have it ID...did not think that far ahead.
Yes I am sure I was in fresh water...Catapiller Island is on the Columbia just north of Frenchman's Bar sort of adjacent to Vancouver Lake.
Too bad it is not a Burbot...I did take an O-Tay picture with it just in case LOL

I think this one ought to count as a wildcard, if only for its obscurity. What did you catch it with?

It is a Cottus Beldingi or better know as a sculpin.

I'm willing to give him a wildcardeouth fishyouth (a.k.a. wildcard fish) for that one. I was leaning towards a tadpole on HGH....LOL

Majority rules, if nothing else you get the freaky fish prize.

At the end of the competition if you need an extra fish, just call it a trout or something like that.

Yeah, I would have taken a small photo with the o-tay obscuring the fish and called it a carp. Then I'd jump with it on the trampoline. :bounce:
