My new Muskie bait I made

Post by Fish-N-Fool » Thu Feb 23, 2012 3:03 am

Here is my first ever attempt at making a rainbow trout swimbait in a 9" Magic Swimmer pattern. I think it turned out pretty good for a first attempt at it, but it is not as nice as my perch pattern that I have done quite a few of. This is just spray cans, sharpie's, and glitter. No airbrushing with real paint like it should be, but I think it will catch a fish. It actually looks better then the picture, hard to take a good photo with indoor lighting.

I'm impressed, it's a very good looking bait. Had a chance to see if it runs true?

Rick,
That's a great looking bait. You seem to be a very creative guy. The baits I have seen you post here look great but the Shaprie has to go man. Do yourself a favor. Use this link and start painting these baits like you know you should. It's affordable and would make your baits last a lot longer. You have a talent there but you're not taking it to the level you can and should. If this doesn't show as a link just copy and paste it into your brouser.

Oh come on Mark I love my Sharpies. lol
It actually holds up very well I have some baits that I painted with sharpies over 5 years ago and they still look great. The secret is I clear coat over the top when I add the glitter and it seals it so the colors never fade. But real yah I'd like to get into that but I only have so much time. I need to put my time towards running my Fish-N-Fool Lure business as I'm designing and marketing a new bait this spring as well as some new rod covers, so I will be lucky to have time to fish. F-N-F, are you saying you built the enter lure from scratch or applied the paint job to an existing lure? Sharpies rule!

It was a clear plastic blank, so no I didn't carve the lure itself. I bought the blank, painted it and added the hardware. This one is the slow sinking model and it makes a great wake bait if you hold a high rod tip. It will run about 5 ft deep if you hold at or under the waterline.

Where does a fella pick up a generic unfinished bait like that. And how do you know what quality your getting? I bought some 3 piece lures like that and the rear section on mine will lock to one side. Could that bee caused by paint on the hardware that the sections pivot on? Or bad Made in China quality?

You can get them here I have not had any problems with the ones I have purchased so far and they swim ok. You can get them in 228 mm /9" or 165 mm/ 6 3/4". These come without eyes, hooks, or split rings l and if you need some for the 9" bait I have some extras I could part with if you are interested.

My first one I did in this perch pattern and hooked up on a giant L.M. Bass on my first trip out with it,

Will these baits work with a fairly fast retrieve? Mine are best used slow. Medium speed and they walk up on one side. Takes to much adjusting to get it right. Unlike a Rapala, where one adjustment gets you running any speed true and straight.

The fastest I have run these is I trolled one at 3 1/2 miles per hour last year in one of the Muskie tournaments at Newman lake while I was eating my lunch and hooked into a toad L.M. Other then that I cast and slow roll them most of the time.

Well no not as far as how the bait swims but the hooks and split rings I use are higher quality and the total cost less then half as much a a new one.
