Sorry man, but that's the price your going to have to pay if you are in a combat zone and can't cast in sync with the rest of the meat line. And when fishing braid it allows you to get your fish in sooner so the rest of the surrounding anglers can get back to fishing. Food for thought.....

Its all good with me. You can fish any way you want. I just wouldn't recomend someone that is new to river fishing jump into a line of guys with braided line might rub some guys the wrong way .

yeah and if you get it snagged up, it leaves and long trail after you break off and really messes up drifts for others when there is a 30ft piece of braid line in the river IMO. your call not mine.

Yeah man, absolutely. It's nice when two experienced anglers can have a civil debate on a thread while still staying on topic. On so many sites people will get so uptight and think its "my way or nothing". I don't really care, if I am doing all the right things and some jerk casts over my line and their line gets cut, dosnt bother me any. But as a beginner, maybe mono is a good place to start. In fact, I remember my first season with braid......it wasn't pretty, lots of sliced fingers and four letter words lol.

YES! And I hate when people do that. What people often forget is you are only as strong as your weakest link. If you get hung up...DON'T CUT THE BRAID! Bring a rag, wrap the braid around your hand and yank. 9 times out of 10 it will break at the knot or somewhere in the leader. Saving you money (cutting 30yds of braid is about a buck) and keeping garbage out of the river.

I wouldn't even bother with fluro. Especialy on the puke. It's much more expensive and burns way too easy. I will use fluro in some conditions, but the knot strength isn't there. If you are going to use fluro, step it up a couple pounds. The fish can't see it anyway. Stren fluroclear makes decent fluro at an affordable price. But only up to 20# I believe. But that's all you would need in the river anyway.Just tie your knots under water and retie at more often then you would think. I like trilene XS for my 8-12# line. P-line in 12-20#. And Maxima from 8#-30# (30#=vernita kings) is probably my favorite.

new superline braid are just as soft as mono. some even have special plastic coating to act like mono but way thinner in dia..no stretch better hookset pack more yds on a smaller reel more sensitiv casting distance improved. i like superslick and suffix 20#-30# it has 6#dia i rarely loose any weights cuz braid is stronger than my mono leader .everyone intitled to their opinion well here it is, but hey what do i know

so is 15lb big game okay for mainline? with 15lb maxima leader (15lb fluoro for clear rivers)?

Any of the lines mentioned would work fine I personally like izor 20-15 for kings and 12-10 for silvers.

+1 Izor is some tough stuff except I got 15lb test for silvers just for insurance when fishing the sticks.

Post a reply 28 posts • Page 1 of 2 • 1, 2 Platypus, Seaguar lines tested...results
by VHawk on Tue Jun 07, 2011 10:51 am

A fellow angler from Canada sent me 3 new spools of various Platypus products to test. "Low Stretch", "Super-100" and "Classic". I also took the opportunity to test out Seaguar's "CarbonPro", a 100% fluorocarbon mainline. And threw in one line previously tested in order to make sure the new scale and spindle I was using were giving me results consistent with previous testing. I'll keep the write up short.

The set up is crude but gives pretty consistent results, and with enough data points I am confident with the quality and that the results are accurate to publish. These are very long sample specimens compared with what is used in the in an industrial materials lab. My samples are close to 6 feet (1.8 meters), the samples tested in the lab are under a foot. Take that into consideration.

Diameters were measured using Lyman manual calipers. All lines from Platypus that were measured were over the companies stated diameter. Lines were tested using the same type set up as previous. The spindle used that was attached to the hand held scale was larger than previous. Although out of 60 or so test segments broken less than 5 broke on the handle. Those results were tossed out. Also out of 11 test segments, the lowest result was tossed out. What I was looking for in a 'clean' test break, was a fishing line that broke at least 6 inches from either anchor point, and a crinkled, 'shocked' look to the line near the break. Here's the results:

Platypus Lo-Stretch 4kg (8 pound) dia=0.0095, average breaking strength...7.82 lbs...........tensile strength in pounds per sq inch= 110,211 lbs psi
Platypus Classic 6lb test dia=0.0095, average breaking strength..............7.597 l.............tensile strength in pounds per sq inch=107,178 lbs psi
Platypus Super-100 10lb test dia=0.011, average breaking strength.........11.84 lbs...........tensile strength in pounds per sq inch=124,580 lbs psi
Seaguar CarbonPro 10 lb test dia=0.012, average break strength.............10.189 lbs.........tensile strength in pounds per sq inch=90,091 lbs psi
Maxima Ultragreen 8lb test dia=0.012, average break strength...............11.524 lbs...........tensile strength in pounds per sq inch=101,895 lbs psi
Maxima Ultragreen 8 pound, 0.012........................12.101.............................................106,984.941 previous result

That difference of 6 ounces in the average breaking strength of the Maxima UG could be attributed to an increase in the lengths of the test segments I was breaking. A fishing line breaks at it's weakest spot, like a link of chain. The more links in a chain, the likelier it becomes that there will be an even weaker link pop up. Not counting the lowest result, the Maxima varied from 11lbs 3 oz to 11 lbs 13 oz over the 10 test segments I broke. This was a new spool of line as well. Could also be a natural variance from different batches of the same product.

The CarbonPro tested out poorly in strength, however it's a full fluorocarbon specialty line. Something probably intended for gin clear water on line shy fish. Previous experience testing Seaguar lines showed exceptional consistency in results, with their leader material breaking consistently within 2-3 ounces off average.

The Super-100 also gave consistent results, a fairly strong line. If it had actually been as thin as they say on the label it would have tested out at near 150k psi. With a +/- 5% variance, it competes with other reliable products like Sufix, Izorline, and Trilene.

Any engineering students out there who would like to partner up and build a hands free device from a small electric motor and a small strain gauge? I'd like to be able to more closely replicate the industry testing standards, ASTMD-2101-91 where a constant rate of extension of ten inches per minute and a specimen gauge length of 10 inches are used. In comparison my sample specimens are very very long, and give correspondingly lower average tensile strengths. The results I get are still reproducible, and reliable. I wouldn't expect a 'shake up' in the order of ranking if i downsized the specimen lengths.

I'll offer this up by itself, there was a thread a while back about line strength and specifically Floro. My WL search Foo seems to be lacking at the time so I offer up this link by itself:

http://www.tackletour.com/reviewfluoroc ... stpg3.html

There were a couple other tests that had to do with dry off the spool strength versus wetted strength. The wetted strengths would really suprise you. Most all lines (except braid) lost a considerable amout of strength when soaked and of course knotted. I'll keep looking for the wetted tests.
