Always going back to old school....

Post by chongo469 » Tue Aug 21, 2012 6:54 pm

So my buddy and I were talking about our grandfathers and the way they taught us to fish compared to all the newer tackle available.... We got talking about yarn balls or yarnies and I mentioned sponge fishing... My grandpa used to take dime size pieces of orange or red sponge and soak them in the roe jar with his eggs... Not only did they work great, I think they out fished real eggs.... So as of late I have been curing up some eggs and decided to try something new... Pom poms from the craft store in red/orange/pink in sizes from 1/4" to 1" round... I'm gonna try my grandpas trick and see if they work well.... I've caught fish without them being scented, but have not tried them scented.... Call me lazy or cheap but I can buy 100 Pom poms for $1.00 and just tie them in like I do yarn balls.... Saves money/ time.... I'm hoping they work just as good as the sponges did when I was little....

For fishing in general, I don't think it makes a difference, but I have yet to try soaking them in egg goo, so I will be experimenting this fall and winter....

I normally just use a large needle to thread them on my leader, and onto the shank of the hook, or just fish them like a corky

Yes as soon as you add scent it is considered bait.... So this set u wouldn't be legal in any selective gear fishery, but I use them without scent on the stilly with great success

Very popular with fly guys all over. I keep a good selection of colors and sizes on and off the hook, I'm too lazy to tie yarn balls.

I have a bunch of leaders strung with pom poms I was going to try last winter steelheading and never got around to it. Can't see why they wouldn't work. I got some at JoAnne's and some at Michael's. I even found some with flash [cool] ..
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

Hey Gringo.... I got some purple ones with flash that worked awesome for Chum last year, but like I say I have not tried scent due to some of the areas I fish are selective gear, but I plan on trying them with scent this year... Also if you like , you can get plain white and dye them in multi colors

My better half finds them at the dollar store also, so she picks me up a bag of different colors almost every trip

At first I thought you used a new word "airobatics" instead of " acrobatics". LOL!
