my $0.02 says go with trout. deep enough for winter and you mentioned streams for possible spawning. fingerlings are fairly cheap and with alot of food will grow quickly. with the streams you probably have crayfish already and maybe sculpin for more chow.

buhba- you will want to check with Fish and Game too before stocking. I'm pretty sure there's some paperwork involved before stocking at least for fish.

BTW, that sounds like a project from a pleasant dream!

Spring-fed waters, 30 feet of depth to let fish overwinter, feeder streams.

You are a lucky man.

+1 and they may even help you obtain some fingerlings for the feeding also. I read on a Aquaponics forum that F&G helped them get the fingerling trout bluegills and bass cat fish for there pond.

The main thing is that if the pond has fresh water inlets/outlets, WDFW is probably going to be very picky about what they allow you to put in it, as your plants can use the inlets/outlets to escape into the larger drainages. You know how nasty things are getting about non-native species in this state.

RockJ,

The pond has been around since, at least the early 50's, as far as I know. I'm sure a lot longeer but smaller before that time period. The three or so tributaries are seasonal but the springs are constant. the drainage channel starts at about ten yards wide and has rockery and reed growth through it. Then it narrows and dispurses into a feild where it deltas into the ground( emerging into smaller ponds down the hill I imagine). As far as I know, there has never been any direct route from the pond to the river down below? You maybe right though, there may be some in there, my son thinks there are(yet he has never seen any [rolleyes] ). Thanks for the response.

Thanks for the link Knota! I'll check it out. The inlet streams are only seasonal so I don't believe that they would provide a very good spawning ground(maybe with the help of a backho hmm?). I also don't believe that there is much of a chance of anything aquadic making it past the drainfield that the pond deltas into? If by chance it did it would have to go through this process a time or two more before it made it to the drainage that leads to the river...
