glowing chum!?

Post by schu7498 » Sat Oct 27, 2012 7:33 pm

Just wondering if any of you guys have experienced this. I caught a few chum on chico a few days ago. I took them to my husbands parents home in kitsap to fillet them because they were both hens and I didnt want the eggs to get wet. I bagged up the bodies and prepared the fish for smoking. I set the bag of leftover fish bodies at the backdoor and meant to take it out but the trash was waiting to be picked up. So I quickly forgot about taking the fish out to the trash. A day goes by and my mother in law wakes up in the middle of the night walks past the back door and notices that there is a light in the room. The bag of fish was glowing bright enough to be able to read by, and not only that it wasnt just one big light but a lot of little lights glowing and flashing. She woke up her husband to show him this phenomenon also. Of course now I have to see this for myself so Im gonna go catch a few more chum and try the experiment myself. I am assuming it has something to do with phosphorescence, but has this happened to you?

I've read about this before, but have never seen it. If I remember right, it was apparently due to the phosphorus in the rotting fish carcass which luminesces when exposed to oxygen.
There are also bioluminescent marine organisms that produce light. Those I've seen in the water. Pretty cool stuff.

Take a video if it happens again! I've never ever heard of that happening. Maybe they passed by Japan after the nuclear leak? Doubt that! I guess bentrod's comment makes more sense.

It IS Halloween after all...

You might want to contact "Ice***rk" on another fishing forum. He investigates local, Paranormal activity! Dead fish carcasses, messaging in Morris code, by way of radiating solid glowing light, with random flashing light. Has paranormal possibilities [thumbup]

Although, I prefer Bentrods theory, that this is of phosphorescence nature.

Bentrod is probably correct. Lots of marine sealife have the same. Squid,Herring, smelts are a few that I can think of. But then with all the pollutants in our waters no telling. Next time while cleaning your fish check the livers and heart out. See if there are spots on the entrails much like cancerous spotting. If so call Marine Biology at U Of W or the WDFW hotline. Iknow that they glow a lil bit but to look like a light is on is not cool at all.

well chico bay is polluted that is why it is not advised to keep bottom fish from there but that is wierd, could be an illegal immigrant from japan trying to spread the chum pox good thing you got rid of them hopefully your parents do not think you were trying to kill them.
Were the eggs glowing too becuase those would make for some good glowballing down at blue creek that is for sure haha.

Too bad we can't use them for bait in WA! Pink and chartreuse are two of my favorite colors! [-X
