Smelt Jigging

Does anyone jig for smelts in the Coronet Bay area?If so can you give a brief synopsis of how you would do it. Thank you..

I did it just south of there at the Oak Harbor marina and I used the seventy jillion "fly" rig.... actually about 5 to 5 fly like things with a sinker on the bottom and a corky on the line. The corky keeps the light straight up and also wiggles when a smelt hits one of the fly-things. Hooks are sharp so the smelt hook themselves.

No smelt in Moses Lake so I haven't done it for a while.

I have fished there for smelt alot over the years and have always done very well. I always used the smelt herring jig with the feathers and just tied a weight onto the bottom. They would come in batches with several biting at one time and a break for a while. I fished on both the docks by the boat launch and also the actual marina docks.I always did alot better on the boat launch docks though.

Someone just told me the smelt isn't good at coronet until march. I was going to head up there a few weekends ago but got a bad report and the weatherwas gonna be bone cchilling so i went squidding instead .

November thru January used to be good at La Conner and the derby was/is February. La Conner and Coronet aren't all that far apart so why would they have different seasons. I think you got bad info on when the smelting was good there. I used to go to Oak Harbor in December and January.

I dont know if you need to chum nor I dont know if its legal but I would use brine shrimp as you find in a pet store. That would be my guess. Most pet stores carry it in their frozen food area. Just a guess on my part.
