57% of Sporty quota met in A9 on opening weekend!
Bad news folks, people killed it at PT and Midchannel. 57% of the quota already taken. We can expect an early closure like last year. Lets pray they decrease the bag limit to 1 fish per person first so we can struggle to maintain some semblance of a season!

Why even shut it down? People were fishing for kings out there before it opened, and i will put money down they will after too. Let alone all the by catch on kings and people who couldn't tell the difference from a king to pink to save their life that keep them.
Seems kind of pointless at this point.

Do you enjoy being a wet blanket, the profit of doom and gloom, bringer of bad tidings, carrier of evil news? Really? REALLY?
Re: 57% of Sporty quota met in A9 on opening weekend!
Not to poke at ya FEAR, but that kind of mentality is the problem..... Those who were out before the opener fishing for and keeping kings, new they were doing wrong... So in your mind set since thieves know they are doing wrong, we should just let it happen or make it legal..... If it closes early, I will be just as upset as everyone else but if it does close early, its for a reason.... Yeah, I know the tribes and their 50% is B.S. but it is what it is.....fear_no_fish wrote:Why even shut it down? Please don't say in my mind set i think stealing is okay. That in no way is what i was saying.
There were charter boats as well as many private boats c&r fishing for kings during the first half of the month when it opened for coho. Theres always people who keep kings because a. they are greedy and can't let a fish go or b. don't know how to properly id a fish.
I was making the point that closing king retention doesnt do a whole lot to saving kings from being caught, and according to fish and game a released king is a dead king.
The whole tribal thing is a different story of its own.

Agreed on the charters, as well as others C&R kings during the opener, but it was open to C&R so why not?..... True that some people go fishing ( more so during pink season ) and don't have a clue what they are looking at... They have a choice to be selective as we do.... I think netting, whether it be tribal or commercial is a major problem. I didn't mean to accuse you of having that mind set, I apologize. I'm just happy its even been open. I remember not to many years ago it not even being an option to fish them.....

What were the angler numbers though? Can those number keep up every day? Or maybe this is good news and the numbers are going to be bigger than they expected.Matt wrote:Bad news folks, people killed it at PT and Midchannel. 57% of the quota already taken. It wouldn't surprise me though.
Re: 57% of Sporty quota met in A9 on opening weekend!
Nate,
The calculation of allowable harvest is based on a multi-faceted management approach. The number of anglers does not necessarily matter. There is a set quota for the allowable take for sport fisherman of hatchery fish. This is the number they are able to harvest, regardless of number of fishers. This number is calculated to ensure the escapement needs of the hatcheries are met to ensure perpetuity of hatchery stocks for the 2013 brood year (this year) and into the future. Another consideration that is made is the allowable number of native encounters. The sport fleet is only allowed X number of encounters with unmarked Chinook each season. This is to limit and monitor the impacts of incidental post-release mortality on unmarked fish. Studies show that this rate can be quite high, although not immediately observable. In this regard, more fishers would be a bad thing, as it would likely correlate with higher incidental bycatch of UM CK.
It may be true, however, that the hatchery run is larger than expected. This is the case frequently, and was the case last season. Last year's closure was due in part to the take levels, but also due to encounters with UM chinook. The benefit analysis made it clear that continuing to fish would be un-beneficial to the Puget Sound CK stock. Unfortunately, the modeling the state does on hatchery escapement (or any escapement for that matter) is really pretty foggy, at best. If the hatchery run were much larger than expected, and the only encounters occurring were hatchery fish, then there would be no reason for an in-season closure. Unfortunately DF&W is of the opinion and practice to follow their escapement estimates to a T and close the season when things get "fishy". And this, of course, still does not take into account unmarked encounter rates. If these are high, it is a guaranteed early closure.

Anglers limited to 1 hatchery chinook salmon
per day in Marine Area 9 beginning July 29
OLYMPIA - Starting Monday (July 29), anglers fishing Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) will be limited to one hatchery chinook as part of their daily limit of two salmon.
State fishery managers are reducing the hatchery chinook limit - down from two per day - to try to stay within the chinook guideline for the area, said Ryan Lothrop, a fish biologist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).
"Catch rates in Marine Area 9 have been high since the fishery got under way 10 days ago," said Lothrop. "So we’ve decided to make this change now to try and stay within our catch guideline and avoid closing the area’s hatchery chinook season early."
As of July 25, preliminary estimates indicate anglers in Marine Area 9 had kept or released about 4,300 legal-size chinook since the fishery opened in mid-July. That’s about 66 percent of the 6,528 chinook catch guideline for the hatchery chinook fishery, which is scheduled to be open through August.
The new catch limit will ensure compliance with conservation objectives and state-tribal management plans in Puget Sound, said Lothrop.
Anglers fishing Marine Area 9 also may retain two additional pink salmon, but must release chum salmon and wild chinook. For details on fishing regulations in Marine Area 9, check the fishing regulations pamphlet at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .
Fishers must have a current Washington fishing license, appropriate to the fishery. Check the WDFW "Fishing in Washington" rules pamphlet for details on fishing seasons and regulations. Fishing rules are subject to change. Check the WDFW Fishing hotline for the latest rule information at (360) 902-2500, press 2 for recreational rules. Oh I know all that. You called it, they dropped the limit to one fish. It's good that they're trying to keep mortality of the wild fish down, so I'm not going to argue with them.
It's great when the hatchery returns are bigger than expect for us folks on the rivers, if they close down the salt and fish keep coming, more for us! That's what I was saying. I don't really care about the marine fishery one way or another, because I'm not going out. Sounds like guys are having good trips out there though. Either way, I wouldn't complain if I were out there catching fish, it's been a good season if the quota has been reached already!
