hey guys I have two questions on the silvers...

a.... it seems like so many people recommend their favorite lure and its never bait. do you feel lures work better than a well rigged plug-cut herring? I love the spin and scent trail I see on my plug cut and brinned herring, but I cant' say they've led to more fish! at the same time, I dont get out often enough to complain about a $6 pack of herring everytime I go, if it adds 5% to my odds, i'll take it.

b.... thinking of sleeping on the boat at Shilshole marina this weekend then working somewhere betweeen Shilshole and shipwreck. I have Johns Saltwater Journal and I'm willing to make the trek by boat to shipwreck if you guys think the fishing is better there.? I've wasted too many days on the salt in unproductive areas this year, I'd rather drive another 30 minutes if it yields more fish...

out in the salt I've caught so many times more silvers on cutplugs then lures. I like to troll them behind a 50/50 nickle brass dodger. I still have never brined my herring, by fresh from pt. defiance.

a. sometimes herring will win, sometimes lures will win. Either way you have a good chance for silvers. They are really aggressive in the salt water. Instead of cut plugging the bait you can rig it whole and still get a good spin, saves time cutting bait and when its rough handling a sharp knife isn't the best idea. No need to cure the herring, you can if you want. When using lures dunk that baby in some stinky herring goop of your choice.

b. I've never really fished around Shilshole but during the weekend did fairly well around ship wreck. Saturday we went 5/6, sunday 2/2 and probably would have caught more but it was pretty rough so it was an early day. Saw others catching fish as well. If there is no fish hanging around shipwreck pretty much anywhere near by can have fish. There is plenty of them out there right now, if there's more I couldn't tell you but we have had pretty good luck and catching at least a couple silver per trip.

full size 11" flashers? sounds like obryan is using very small ones, those chrome 50/50s are only like 4 1/2 inches aren't they?

I just love the way uv brined herring looks in the water, but sometimes it seems like repellent! lol

we use mostly 11" but will sometimes use the full size herring dodgers, like 9"? or so. We give those a really good bend too.
Ive yet to try brinning herring, maybe i will here soon

Its not the size of the flasher that matters, its how you use it

my flashers are pretty small and I my leader length runs about 30". I did experiment up at sekiu with down to about a 12" leader and still caught silvers on my 50/50. thats also the length I trolled my bare red hooks for lake washington sockeye and done well.

I have used bigger flashers and abe&als but don't like the drag. bought a kite tail flasher to try but haven't used it yet.

Basically whatever works for you, keep doing it. Mostly you just need to get it in front of their nose which means troll fast, cover lots of area and try different depths.
