Again Im not trying to be difficult but to change the action on either is by your speed I thought. When I troll for silvers I troll faster then I do kings. I have some large flat ones that are angular cut as opposed to the bent ones. Geeeze This site makes me be so technical. Haha

For the longest time, all I had was dodgers. Herring dodgers to be exact. All they had attached to them was cut plug herring. Been many years now since switching over from herring to hoochies. First, the hoochies were attached to a dodger, which was attached to a deep six. Well before the downrigger revolution.

But soon figured out that Silvers like a faster troll speed. Faster than the dodger was designed for. Then a flasher was added to the arsenal. Shortly thereafter was a manual downrigger. I have to admit, the first time I tied on a Salmon hoochie. There was zero confidence in that lure. Now, sometimes the hoochie has a basting of scent or strip of herring, but not always.

As years past, fresh herring became harder and harder to come by. Frozen, was a pain in that it had to first be obtained. Then brined the night before. That hoochie is not hard to come by at all. Still think about throwing on a dodger for old times sake, but not much interest in the mess of a herring.

Ive vused Dodgers along time. I still use them. For coho I rarely troll and deeper then 30 feet. Sometimes just 15 foot behing the wake of the boat.I rarely use my Deep Sixes or downriggers for Coho.

That was the method old dad taught me, when I was in my teens. Funny, I called a well known sporting goods store in North lynnwood. Chatted a very short time about Coho fishing. Specifically: "If the Ocean Coho had shown up in Puget Sound. I then asked if shallow fishing a kidney sinker, dodger, and herring or squid was still effective? Seems the downrigger and deep fishing has taken over, I said". The owner, which is not the same name as the one on the sign. Said abruptly: "that system does not work anymore! Said he was busy, and hung up". I have received some odd responses from that store.

Anyway, glad to hear someone is still using that age old technique, and doing well with it.

On two salt trips this year, an older gent was witnessed drift fishing a cut plug herring. Now, that is staying true to tradition.

Thats me.. The olde fashioned way. What once worked probably dosent make the stores enough money. A banana weight #0 Dodger , hoochie and hooks cost about 8 bucks where buying the latest and greatest cost $25.00. It all about the math. Hehehe. I went to the Eddie Bauer Headquarters where I did a job there. I went through the EB museum. What they called antiques is whats found in my tackle box. Hahaha

Well then, every time you go fishing with that tackle box in hand. What you have there, is a mobile museum in a box! That is like stumbling onto Granpa's stuff in the garage or attic. What a find...........hehehe.
