I guess my question is "was this kid breaking tribal law?"

I had to know for myself also Racfish, pulled from Skokomish fishing regs. Appears he was going against tribal regulations.

In looking at the law, does not say no snagging so I could be wrong unless he was using one of those weighted trebles.

Im sure the WDFW knows about this kind of happenings. Its truly sad but I dont think Washington state can do anything about it. This is a federal issue not a state issue. The state can only monitor the non native fishery. It was a federal judge that really gummed up the works in the early 70's. He has sinced passed on and no federal judge will have the Huevos to change this law. Back in the day Judge Boldt gave the natives full rights to half (which is really 3/4 ) to the natives. Boldt was buddy buddy with the Puyallups at the time. I personally agree with all my fellow fisherpeople about how awful this is. Unfortunately its like the saying about beating a dead horse. I don't have a problem with Native Americans having rights to these resources, after all, it wasn't Native American culture and practices that royally messed them up in the first place. Especially support it when it's to uphold traditions, culture and feeding families. The Boldt decision is still crap though, 50% is a nice figure to pull out of one's rear end as Judge Boldt did, but it isn't going to change anytime soon to your point. Take care.

I don't have a problem with Native Americans having rights to these resources, after all, it wasn't Native American culture and practices that royally messed them up in the first place. Especially support it when it's to uphold traditions, culture and feeding families. I stand corrected on that statement, you are right. Still disagree with the ruling and how it's practiced though.

Frankly though, I think of all players the commericials should be the first to be cut back in favor of sporties. The colombia river reform effort is great.

Absolutely even the tribes, they whole 50% of the harvest is waaay outdated. They dont need to catch all those fish. They have casinos and junk now. We just need politicians at the federal level who care enough and uave the cojones to renegotiate thetreaties. I have heateddebates with my native brothers and cousins all the time about it.

It's tough, if i were in thier shoes I wouldn't want to give anything up either and the history being what it is would be distrustful. If impacts to wild steelhead and threatend salmon were stopped I'd probably care a bit less. Would still want sporties interests respected a bit more than they seem to be in finding a balance.

Sorry but you apparently have no experience in the matter. Yeah they have it pretty good right now but they have been far from equal for generations. And not to start a whole nother debate but governments dont make people equal. We do, mans natural state is to be free and that comes from us, not elected officials.

If a tribe volunteered/voted ok, but not thru force, we've been there done that and it should more of a national shame than it is but you know the saying "history is written by the victors". That aside, the reality we face today is that netting wild steel and salmon is not helping their recovery and sporties are bearing the brunt of that fact in decreased opportunity everywhere and that's crap since we don't net.

In fact if I may be so bold, your countenance has a famous resemblance to that of a western cowboy. I am just saying its confusing that's all.
