Discovery Pass vs Launch Fee at Camano St Park??

Post by dutchman2858 » Sun Dec 15, 2013 1:28 pm

Ok, even though I've been in the area for 3 yrs, I'm still having a problem figuring out all the *&^^%#%$ permits needed to park/fish/launch in WA! My latest question came up at Camano Island State Park. I drove into the park for the first time and kept seeing the "Discovery Pass needed" signs everywhere. Realizing that my vehicle access pass (came with license) didn't cover this park, I plunked down my $10 and drove down to the launch. $7 to launch. At the time I figured I was covered with the Discovery Pass, so didn't buy the launch pass.

Now I'm wondering: did I need the launch pass but not the Discovery Pass, or the Discovery Pass and not the launch pass, or both? I'm trying to decide what annual passes to buy next year and am frankly confused.

at any and all Washington State Parks with a boat launch;

either 1 day or annual discovery pass PLUS paying $7 for the launch

OR you can buy the State Parks environmental/boat launch pass and you WON'T need to pay for launching/parking and you WON'T need either/any discover pass.

so if you launch at any state park's launch more than 4.7 times in the 12 months that you use/have/own the Park's Pass you'll save money by getting a State Parks Pass at $80 over paying $17 each daily launch use. The State Parks Pass is good for one full year from the MONTH that you buy it. So if you buy it Dec 16th, it's good until Dec 31, 2014. If you had bought it Dec 1st it would still be good until Dec. 31, 2014 and so you would have gotten a month free use. A ranger told me that when I bought one of my first passes years ago. You can buy it online on the Parks web site, you can then print out the 'receipt', and use it for 2 weeks, then the real pass will show up in the mail.

If a person left their home travelling 40 mph... and got to the Samammish launch... if they showed up with a discover pass, but wanted to launch would they get a ticket if they did not buy a daily launch pass?......... but if they were travelling at a rate of 60 mph, and made 3 stops for various passes needed, would they get there in time to launch, or would the vehicle/trailer that left 1 hour earlier without any sort of passes, and travelling at a higher rate of speed, would this vehicle get to launch first? Solve for X. #-o #-o Sorry for the waste of space, but I couldn't resist.
Just buy all the bloody passes you can, and say your prayers.

In my absence... Someone finally found the answer! Wheh!

So, in summary: If you are a boat guy who fishes state parks and WDFW lands... buy your fishing license, rcv the Access Pass for access to WDFW lands and launches AND buy the annual Natural Investment Permit (State Parks watercraft launch permit)..... no need for a discover pass since the NIP covers ALL access to state parks... according to what I just read..at the above link

Correct. BUT if you use or launch a boat, hunt, hike, bird watch at any DNR lands, parking places, launches, you HAVE to have a discovery pass, none of the others will work. Oh ya, that includes a wedding at whatever that place was in the mountains, they were giving out tickets to all the guests because they didn't have a discovery pass. The wedding was planned before the discovery pass was instituted.

So, a lake like Coffeepot is DNR and there is no other pass other than the Discover to cover that one.

Correct. Not that I've ever heard of Coffeepot, but yes, if DNR owns the property, owns and maintains the launch, then only the discover pass will work.

and ahh,,, just a technicality... it's the Discover Pass..... like the credit card cause it's gonna cost ya some bucks! LOL The Discovery is a retired space shuttle....among other

AMX>>>> if you can plan a low "wind" trip to Coffeepot,,,,,, I highly recommend! just this side of Sprague and north..of 90

that is, if you already have the Discover Pass.... selective, no bait, trout and bass....

LOL I've been lazy all week... barely made it out of bed for today's game! LOL A nice win for the Hawks! It would have been better had the niners lost... but it's all good!

50/7.....so roughly 7 launches per year at the state parks since 30+50=80

Ha, Ha!! Mark,

Ya, I love that you found that. But seriously, I know that someone on here as the legal answer.
But at the end of the day, if you fish a fair amount, I say just buy them all, and let God sort them out.
There will be a day, when you are on some funky country road, and you are about to stop and fish... and you will say, "Blank" dang man.. I shoulda bought that other pass!

AMX has got it! (to answer the question in this thread)

http://www.parks.wa.gov/parking/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's this $80 State Park Boat Launch Pass in lieu of the Discover pass

or buy the Discover Pass and pay the $7 launch fee each time you launch

or pay the $10 daily entrance fee and the $7 launch fee

one I almost forgot>>>>> IF you have a disabled parking placard, that gives you day time access to state parks(not camping), then pay the $7 launch fee(probably) call em to check on the launch fee... but probably since camping is not covered with the disabled parking pass.

Easier to buy em all... but damn, that adds up......

It does add up and fast. With all this nickel and dime crap going on it might be time to move out of state.

Tempting... but, I really feel, it's tough to beat our year round opportunities.... in Warshington. Salt, fresh, big, small, ice or no.... I get by with the access pass and paying some launch fees on the salt...... tuna to sunfish.crab and clams... in spurts, all year round. Where in MT can ya catch halibut...or fish in 50 degree weather in December.... I do agree that user fees are out of hand.... since when I was younger, taxes covered most all of it. Those days will never come back.... fuel is my largest expense for fishing

I think you need the natural investment pass and the discover pass both if you plan on launching at state parks and not have any cash outlay at the time of your visit (aside from possibly purchasing the passes). I have all three: the one for DNR lands that I get with my fishing license, the Discovery pass, and the natural investment pass. BTW- with the natural investment permit, you can access state parks, and launch your boat from said park without any issues even when the state park is "closed" for the winter .
