It's not a new trick, but a good one. However because I fish rip rap 99% of the time I drop shot, I can lose 3-5 weights in a 15-minute time span. That would be too costly.

I don't even use "drop shot" weights anymore. That too is costly. I now use pencil lead because it's far more economical.

This is an old school trick. I like to use a football head with a hula grub or a beaver on the bottom. Tough to beat at times.

I'm with islandbass. Especially fishing around rocks, lost dropshot weights, not to mention jigs can be expensive. Like islandbass I also make my own dropshot weights. I use hollow bodied pencil lead along with .30 soft wire. I make a loop with swivel on it at one end of the wire, then slide the other end through the pencil lead, then bend the wire up. It is not only far less expensive, but because of its thinner profile, I have fewer hangups in the rocks than when using any of the store bought dropshot weights. And because pressure bites are so common when dropshotting, one is more apt to set the hook when weight is felt, being more confident that it isn't a hangup. And how many of us have lifted up on what we thought was the bottom only to have "the bottom" jerk back and be gone before we could react.

.30 is 5/16th inch and the size of the whole number 2 pencil, not just the lead inside the pencil.

Instead putting the pencil lead on your line try this neat little trick. Take a wire, like spinner bait wire (any spring wire about 8" long will do)and twist an eye on one end, slide a peice of pencil lead or an egg sinker up the wire and crimp in place. Bend the end of the wire in a arc. Now you have a drop shot weight that does not hang up in the rocks You can adjust the weight by unbending the wire and sliding more or less weight on.

Another modification I've seen on your setup is the pencil lead is actually crimped on the wire, leaving a 6 or so inches of wire below. Now you have something like a Walley Walker, where the weight isn't touching the bottom, just the tip of the wire.

Did you look at the picture???? Why would you ever put the weight on the bottom? The whole idea is to keep from getting hung up.

btw, i've gone through over 80 weights in a weekend fishing the rock slides at lake roosevelt, so these are a life saver!

I bought some the other week. Sometimes they work better than the Quickdrops, always work better than the round weights.
