topwater baits

Post by goonatic » Sun Apr 13, 2014 3:08 pm

i know topwater baits are very popular in the salt over on the east coast, but how about here? like in the mornings when all the baitfish are surface boiling and the kings and silvers are gobbling them up? seems like itd be a cool idea, once you replaced the trebles with si-wash's and all

While they are even more effective for breaking salt bass, they are certainly effective for salmon when they are hitting schools of baitfish. Rapala style lures have been best through the years, and I have used Lobina, Luckycraft, and Bomber topwaters with success. There's nothing quite like a 40-50 lb king hitting a topwater in a feeding frenzy. I have had better luck up North as opposed to down here. They generally like an active pause retrieve action. Been using them about 45 years. Good luck!

Mostly I like jigs and spoons from shore, but bait works well, and occasionally Bass style plugs, particularly for silvers. In the fall quick retrieved salt streamers do wonders, especially in the northwest strait. The jetty at La Push can be pretty awesome at times, and you can get bottom fish at other times. Keep looking at the reports to track these critters.
