Hoodsport King Salmon

I am heading up to Hoodsport this weekend with my boat for some camping and crabbing. While I am there I would like to catch some Kings if possible. I went last year in early August and got skunked. There didn't seem to be many boats out on the water and I haven't read much positive about fishing the canal in that area. On the other hand the Skokomish was jam packed and I talked to a few people coming back to camp with nice fish. Combat fishing isn't my idea of fun so I would like to stick to the canal if possible. You'd think if the fish were entering the river in large numbers you'd also have a good shot at catching them in the canal from the mouth of the river and north. Does anyone have any tips for fishing this area?

I would say target the mouth of the skok. They mill around out there.

i like trolling and jigging the mouth of the skoke, will be there sometime midweek.

For those who don't know, you should be careful fishing that area. Last year I launched in Union, sped around the corner and stopped about 100' from shore just off the mouth then flipped on the fish finder. The finder was reading between 1-2' deep! I turned around and made a long SLOW retreat. I didn't realize most of the bay there is a huge tide flat, luckily my little Boston Whaler only has like an 8" draft

Tossing spoons and jigging at the mouth of the skok can be killer. Ive seen boats limit out by throwing spoons through schools. Skok kings are bitey!

They sure are. At least before the hordes of skok snaggers get at them. That's what makes the mouth a good option. Before they've been harassed.

be careful coming back into that ramp too, I hit that big hump in front of union with my prop once at low tide coming from hoodsport.
