Hook Size poll.

Not sure how to do a poll on here, so just post your size. What hook size do you use for floating eggs under bobber?

I like Size 1 for drifting or floating eggs. (edit: Target = Coho. Smaller for Steelhead and larger for Kings)

Depends on the river. I'm hunting big coastal Kings at the moment so I go 2/0 to 3/0 with a HUGE glob of eggs.

1/0 or 2/0 I was using smaller and found that I was missing more bobber downs. When I switched to larger size hooks my hook up ratio went way up.

For Coho right now, I like a 1/0 Owner SSW with a size 1 trailing about a 1/4" off the main hook. Helps big time with hook ups and short biters. Just not recommended if you are going to be releasing any fish. For Steelhead I like size 1 hooks. and for Kings it depends on the size of a glob I am using. But Usually its the same set up I use for Coho

Trailer hook huh. Maybe that's what I need! I get lots of short strikes and strikes where they only get my eggs and by the hook! How do you tie on a trailer? (I know I can google it)

What size are you using? I went up in size and greatly reduced the missed hook ups! Was rather surprised and the immediate difference it made. I like the trailer hook too.

I'm using a 1/0 gami octopus hook. Barbless of course :-P I picked up some 3/0 but know those are a bit big for coho

For the smaller Coho right now I've been using size 1's, as well as for steelhead. Later I go up to a 1/0. I have been missing a lot of fish off the size 1's though. Gonna probably have to go up to 1/0 soon. I never go above a 2/0 for eggs myself, and rarely even use a 2/0 either.

I'm with Jerry on this one. Although I'll use up to 3/0 for coho. I like the hook coming out the top of their nose.

1/0 up top, 1 as a trailer - 1/4-3/4 inch between hooks, and usually throw a 1/16 - 1/4 oz baitweight above the whole mess. For kings this may step up to a 2/0 or 3/0 with a 1/0 trailer. don't use bait for steelhead, chums or pinks

ResQ. I tie my setups in a fixed position... just tie your trailer hook with an egg loop/snell know, then when done, slide a larger hook on your line, back it down to within 1/4 - 1/2 inch of the trailer hook (try to get one point up on one, one down on the other) then tie the second hook in with a bait loop too.... don;t leave too much gap between trailer and top hook or the trailer will swing around on a cast and wrap up on the top part of leader.....
to tie the same thing with an adjustable/sliding top hook, tie on the trailer with a egg loop/snell, slide the upper hook on, then use a second piece of mono to tie an egg loop/snell/nail knot on the top hook. you'll have to think a bit about this one, as you want your main leader to be looped through the knot so that it forms the egg loop.....
Both work, I prefer the fixed setup as there is less dinking around with the tie job, and you don;t have to fiddle so much with getting the top hook to "stay" exactly where you want it....

Seems like almost half the fish are landed with only the trailer hook holding the fish....

Ok, so I tied up a double eggloop knot. Size 1 trailer and 1/0 upper. Looks weird lol. I will try it out this weekend and see!

Agreed. Smaller hooks dont grab as much bone nor do they have as good of hook exposure in a clump of roe. Im 1/0 for steelhead. 2/0 for coho and 4/0 for nooks

I noticed that was my problem with smaller hooks. Worked fine on the 4-6lb fish, but last few fish I hooked were around 8 lbs. I watched the fish pick up the eggs, and I noticed the smaller hook wasn't able to go all the way through the tongue on the larger fish and it popped right out with one headshake.

Strider, you're correct. Anywhere the Anti-Snagging rule is in place then a two hook setup would be illegal except for on gear trolled from a boat or on buoyant lures. That means that drifting or floating a two hook setup for eggs on the Snohomish, Skykomish, Wallace, Duamish, Green, Puyallup, etc. rivers is not currently legal.
