Fishing the Nisqually River and need help!

Post by MrWiggins » Wed Aug 12, 2015 3:32 pm

Hello everyone! This is my first post on here. I am going to be fishing the Nisqually River for salmon and would like every piece of info I can get. First of all I have been to the Handicap hole-http://wdfw.wa.gov/lands/water_access/30583/.

Here are my questions:
1-What spots are their on the Nisqually River to fish? Please make this as clear as possible. I always see cars parked next to No Trespassing signs.
2-What methods/setups do you guys like to use? If its clear visibility?Murky?
3-How easy is access to the River from the Puget Sound?
I have a 14ft V-hull boat with a 20HP motor that I take on the puget sound and I wonder if we could use it on the Nisqually.
Any additional information, tips or tricks are really helpful. Thank you for any responses! [thumbsup]

1.) ive never fished the nisqually
2.) ive litterally caught darn near 1000 pink salmon in the last few pink runs.. TWITCH MARIBOU JIGS in all conditions. that should be your main go to technique for all pink salmon, in all areas. murky or clear. if for some reason they just dont want that, then go with pink spinners like blue fox in 2'-5' of water. swinging pink streamers on a sink tip 4-7wt fly rod works also if thats your flavor. twitching jigs is hands down by far the most affective technique for pinks.
cast to your 1 o clock, let it sink 1 second per foot deep you think the water is, twitch your rod tip while slowly reeling your slack, no need to swing for the fences, just very lightly twitch the tip. ive tried all the popular pink salmon techniques, twitching jigs wins every time. i dont do it lately because it isnt a challenge for me anymore.

Thank you for the info jonb! If you have caught that many salmon then my hat is off to you. We went to Nisqually this morning and gave your twitching method a try. We were not having any luck so we switched to some plunking with a spin-n-glow and shrimp. I caught a Rainbow trout about 8" long. The King salmon were surfacing but I don't think there is to many Pinks right now. I saw someone hook onto a Salmon but I don't think he got it to the bank. I have Salmon fever and have to catch a Salmon! If anyone has any information that could help me please Post!!

Better check the emergency rules - I just saw something about the river closing due to drought issues, but dont remember exactly what sections.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
