Check with the various fish markets in your area.

Years ago I would call around until I found one ready to clean salmon within the next 24 - 48 hours and ask them to hold me several pounds of skeins.

They had no problem with it whatsoever provided I paid the going rate as set by the Asian buyers.

I can't imagine this is no longer a viable solution.

For the future - make it a point to fish both the Pink and Chum fisheries hard. With even moderate success you should be able to stay in eggs through the various seasons you fish.

also sorry for the inactivity but for clarification yes, eggs are by far my preferred method. i just wasnt able to fish chum and pink the last few years bc of college etc, and havent had much success with other methods this season

One of the salmon hatcheries is giving away free fish. Could probably score some eggs that way. You'll have to look up what one on the fish and game website.

I'm back. Salmon Roe prices are a bit spendy; but that is normal for this time of the year. I have a couple of options. But I think like Joey and a couple others have suggested; fishing for pinks and chums is the most inexpensive method. Currently market prices for fresh Coho eggs would put you around $8.50/lb. And Chum would be around $10.50/lb.

In August I got 200lbs of fresh king eggs for myself and a couple of fishing buddies; the price then was $3.50/lb. If I can get that next year, I will mention it on here and try to get a group of people who want to commit.

@SeaToSummit - please do. As a novice poor salmon fisherman thus far I would love to get down on some good eggs instead of the hard store bought kind that doesn't seem too appealing to me nor the fish.

That being said - store bought cured eggs - how long should they last in the fridge? Should they be "hard" and clumpy? Eggs I've used in the past were not like this past batch I recently got. I'm thinking maybe a very old package or is that how they should be?

You guys are funny. You'll buy fireworks, cigarettes ,gasoline, support casinos but feel horrible buying eggs from the native Americans. LOL. I go to the 1st south bridge and buy eggs. Big deal. Its better then no eggs for steelhead season.They are going to fish whether you buy eggs or not. Try the Nisqually hatchery too.

We had this whole in depth 4 hr conversation how the natives were oppressed in class today, i thought to my self oppressed? They get a check every month from the government ( for example the puyallup each get $2400) including each and every child they have, live in houses we have built for them, fix what they destroy and they claim to be oppressed? What a damn joke....

What I usually do for an egg substitute, til I catch a hen or two, is make some yarnies a bit bigger than the size cluster I would use and soak them overnight in pautzke's egg nectar and drift fish or run them under a float. I've done pretty good with that as a stop gap solution. Raw shrimp soaked in it overnight with a bit of salt to toughen them works too if ya don't wanna tie a bunch of yarn balls.

White prawns works for me. A guide friend told me about them and they do work.I go get a couple skeins and use Patsukes brine. That stuff works well.

Yes, it would open them up for and investigation into improprieties. They can 't give it away and they can't sell it. Either way anyone could call graft and corruption.
