Dragoon Creek

Ok I live near Deer Park and Dragoon creek is nearby...its not on the regs so I assume it falls under the general regulations but has anyone had any luck anywhere on this creek? Last I heard they were going to close down the campground off of 395.....

I think that the campground is closed and has been for several years. At least it was the last time I drove by the sign on the highway.
Many years back, I fly fished it and the only thing that I got out of it was scrap fish. However, that doesn't mean that there isn't any trout in it. Hopefully, someone else can shed some more light on the subject and info that is more current.

my buddy lives on property along dragoon and we tied on some flies behind bobbers (too many low branches, etc. to use the fly rod and not enough creek to use a spinner or other gear) and did well catching rainbows in the deeper pools. nothing to get too excited about, they were about 8-10", but we had fun catching & releasing and looking for other spots to try.

i haven't tried other parts of dragoon, so i don't know if it gets any deeper/wider. his place is pretty close to hwy 395 @ north road. i think the turnoff for the campground is only 1/4 mile or so down the road from his turnoff so i would think other access points in the area should have the same success?

I use to live in that area as a kid and we use to catch trout from the campground area. If i remeber right we even caught some browns. There are some good holes through out the camp ground area and up above it. Im sure there are some nice fish in there still you just have to put in the time and aquire access.

Dragoon has big browns and some pretty healthy brookies, as well as rainbows. I grew up fishing Dragoon, frog, wethey… all of those creeks have good fish. Your best bet is to do some culvert jumping. Get a Metzger’s map and see where the creek crosses the roads out there. The best way to fish it is to knock on doors. Just tell them you practice catch and release, don’t use worms, and you pick up garbage, 9 times out of ten people are cool with you walking their property. The biggest brook I ever caught came out of Dragoon was 18.5 inches…. Quite a story for another post I guess….. The camp ground is a good spot. Just drive down that road and park at the gate and walk in. Now that people are not camping there, there are not a swimmers in your way. If you put some time in it is great fishing.

how about still fishing? I planned on taking my son to the old campground area. He likes to cast and retrieve but at his speed he always gets hung up on the bottom lol...maybe a water bobber and a fly would do better for him on the creek.

I drove over to the campground and it has been reopened for this year, I didnt stop to the camp host though...looks like a nice little campground though the creek is pretty overgrown....its about the size of Cedar Creek up in Ione, wa.
