Buying walleye fillets?

Post by kevinb » Tue Jan 20, 2009 7:07 am

Anyone aware of a fish market that sells walleye fillets? or maybe crappie?
There's a great fish market in Tacoma but when I mentioned walleye....their eyes go crosseyed
and blood drains from their ears :clown: Then they mention they have tilapia for a substitute...no thanks
I would love to catch them myself but won't be hitting any wally waters anytime soon.

Yep!!! Mutual Fish or high stalls at Pike place Market. Smell them and if they smell like fish :shaking: ...pass. They should smell fresh with not much smell at all. :pl: Good Luck Mutual Fish:fish: is closest to you.

Does Mutual Fish regulary have walleye? I'm thinking about driving up there and grabbing
some but curious to know if this is something that is found normally.

I miss walleye too, being from Michigan, you could buy fillets at any store. The best of course was to catch them your selves. Probably the best freshwater fish table fare.

Mutual has a great aray of different freshwater fish.Every week its something different. Most of the time I see Crappie,Catfish,Smelts,Mullets,Walleye and Bass.I love just browsing through it.Another great fish market is Uwajimaya in Seattles International District.I go there daily now during the Tet holiday(Chinese New Years).Lots of firecrackers and good times to be had.Gung Hay Fat Choy

Before coming up to the fish mongers, maybe try calling first and asking them if they have what you want! It's easy....godd luck on your buying trip.

Wow! I did not know it was legal inb this state to sell freshwater fish at market. very cool. I know that you can buy fresh walleye from the Native Americans on the Yakama Reservation. They will sell them at the local stands when they are netting. Hard for me to fork out cash when they are calling for you to catch them though!!

Williams Seafood in Spokane has Walleye fillets, frozen for $12.49 a pound. Considering that I once went on a 3 day fishing trip and spent $350, and came home with 1 walleye, $12.49 sounds decent.

Most of the fish that is sold in Wa. is brought in from other states.Prolly the Southern States. In Wa. a store can only buy seafood from state authorized companies.I think because of our strickter fishing laws.I'm pretty sure the warmer freshwater species are flown in.

I dont mean to harp on this fish store.Allthough its in my neighborhood.Hehehe.Going to Mutual is a experience worth looking at.Pricers may be higher but the quality is what I'm interested in.They know myself and my family like certain types of fish so they call us when its in.I appreciate good service. They will pinbone your fish if you ask.Same pretty much with Uwajimayas.Maybe higher priced but the freshness makes it worthwhile.Way better then anyone in the Public Market.IMO

If the walleye is truly from Washington State and not farm raised, I believe that the only folks allowed to harvest them for sale would be our Native Americans. For everyone else, selling non farm raised sport fish is a no-no.
