Local Produce

Post by racfish » Thu Jul 16, 2009 10:28 am

I love this time of year. All the local farmers are selling their fruits and veggies. From Arlington to Zilla I'm buying all local stuff now.I've mentioned before about Carpinitos. Their lettuce at .75 a head cant be beat.Speaking of which local beets are in too.I love fresh boiled beets still slightly crunchy in sweet Rice Vinager.Berries as far as you can see.I've put up loads of Berry Jams.If you go east there is local corn, beans, cukes both slicing and pickling, zukes, onions and garlic. If youre on the east side of the lake try the local market in Fall City.He goes east every other day.

REMEMBER TO SUPPORT OUR LOCAL FARMERS.Ask your grocer to sell local produce.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

Asparagus are pretty much done and brussel sprouts will be in oct nov.I buy my brussel sprouts from them still on the stalk.I made pickled sprouts for the first time last season. They were soooo good I ran out .Carpinitos is the best to me. I've been doing business with them for over 30 years. The old man Joe was a big builder in the 60's and 70's in the valley.

A friend of mine was part of a co-op. The "organizer" would get deliveries from the different local farms associated. Then disperse "shares" amongst the members based on their share size. The only draw back was less variety at a give time and WAY MORE of what was in season localy. There were times he would get so much of certain foods he just could not eat it all no matter how creative he got with his recipes and had said veggie at every meal.

My final okra tally is 32 pints and 13 quarts. The large pods in the quarts are used in Gumbos. The lil ones are eaten like a pickle.I finnished canning them by 11:00 last night.
