you can cut cost quite a bit if you purchase material from craft shops instead of the fly shops. Things like yarn, thread and tinsel. As for feathers and fur, I gather most of mine. I get my Bucktails from friends and dye them myself. If you have a leather store near you like Tandy or the leather factory, You can get some pretty good deals on hides from time to time. Just check out there scrap bin.

I mentioned this before on another thread but another place to get good cheap matterial for fly tying is the $1 store. Feather dusters, they make them in all diffrent colors and for a buck you get a good amount of material.

This is kind of off topic but when the pinks were running pink jigs and hoochies were selling out quick and it was hard to find them some times. My neighbor used his girl friends underwear and tied up a bunch of pink jigs. I know the pinks very easy to catch but in a bind any type of material will get the job done.

A little secret but green jigs or all white jigs actually outfished the pink jigs for me this year. Green/white/chartreuse worked, as did mini green hootchie jigs I made....

1/4oz for weight, cast em out, twitch em in the bottom 1/3 of the water column and enjoy catching endless pinks...

Yeah I found that I liked the green hoochies as well later on in the year. I just stuck to the basics for the first part of the season, just kind of learning the ropes of pink fishing. Once I got the hang of it, it seemed like I could use anything, and the pinks almost got anoying towards the end. BUT cant for the next run

been doing a move so all my stuff for tieing was packed up but i just got all my fishing stuff together and will be making up several different jig patterns soon for us. so i'm going to make up a few dozen and try to put pic's on to entice some swap'n. <')//<

Here's the jig I'll be tying for the swap:

Hook: #4 VMC high carbon (red)
Head: 1/16 oz, 2-layer paint - glow over pearl + black eye (sharpie)
Body: White size 2 chenille + green super fluff yarn + red dot (sharpie)
Tail: White marabou

right now i will not have the time to host, though i will try to in some future swaps. i'll tie anything but would perfer to keep it in sizes for trout, crappie, sunfish, etc. 6-12? keep in mind there may be a few new to tieing.

I bought a vice, actually a pretty cool set of tools and a vice in a wooden box from Sportsman's.

I don't think that any of us were born with a bobbin in our hands and a vice clamped to the crib. We will all help you if you have any questions about tying. It is a great hobby and you will enjoy it greatly. Oh, BTW, in all the years that I have been tying, I have never had a fish jump up out of the water and say " Sir, that fly of yours isn't tied as nicely as the one I just saw recently":-s

i still have some jigs and flies that i tied over 25 years ago in my box's and really don't look like what i tie now. they caught fish then and will still catch fish now. if you stay simple you'll learn faster. i'll fish every jig made and post pictures of whats caught! the wife says i have to many stuffed box's but i'm going to keep all swap jigs in one box, <')//<

Tying flys and jigs are great. Its not cheap to get started but you will save $ in the long run, when its all said and done, and a pricless hobby. Cabelas has a HUGE amount of material.

This weekend they have the sportmans show in Puyallup. I highly recomend any 1st time fly tiers to attend. They have tons of material and seminars that go almost all day on tieing flys.

here are 6 jigs for the swap:
hook: sz 6-1/32
head: 1/32oz, renegade tube head, 2 coats whit "natural pearl" nail polish
body:white marabou and mini orange marabou with some gold flashabou tied with ared orange 3/0 waxed mono cord. with a whip finish.
