Spin N Glow

Post by JT26 » Mon Jul 23, 2007 2:21 am

We are in the process of moving, and my dad was going to throw away a bunch of Spin N Glow things and i asked him can i keep them if theres something to catch with them besides steelhead.

So is there? Would they work for bass or something?

When targeting Steelheads, I have often hooked up with Silvers and Kings on spin and glows. NEVER throw out lures if they are in good shape, even if they might be designed for a fish you have no intention of going for.
Years ago I had an uncle pass and he left me several boxes filled with hundreds of different bass lures. Half of which were new and never gotten wet yet. Because I was completely wrapped up in salt water fishing at the time,
I traded them for some salt water lures. So if you decide not to use the spin & glows, you still may have good trading value

I know you really want to go for pinks this year and spin n glows work great in the right areas. You can either plunk with them off of the bottom with a sand shrimp in medium to slow water or drift fish with them in swifter water. Best colors are pink ones and orange ones. Just make sure if you are fishing for pinks with them you use the smaller sized ones.

Plunking rig- 1 pyramid sinker 4-8oz (depending on the speed of the current)
2 swivels
1 bead
1 spin n glo
1 1/0 or 2/0 hook
1 sand shrimp (sporting good stores sell these by 1 or 2 dozen)
2 lengths of leader (1. 6-8" length and 1. 3' length)

Ok now to rig it, tie your pyramid sinker to the 6-8" length of leader(this piece is actually called a dropper but I am trying to keep it simple for you) and then one of the swivels to the other end. Now slide the open/untied end of the swivel onto your mainline then put the bead on your mainline right after, now tie on the other swivel. Once you have done this tie your hook onto the 3' leader with an egg loop or bait holder knot or some other variation of this knot. Then slide your spin n glo onto the line above the hook (tapered side towards the hook) and tie the end of your leader to the swivel that is tied to your mainline. And last but not least it is optional if you pinch the head off of the shrimp or not, but you want to hook it twice then bring your bait loop around it. Also, Dick Nites are killer for Pinks.

i dont understand all the swivel/bead stuff, but is this basicly the main idea of what you said, mallard?

and also, i know about the spoons and bought four, but just one dicknite, all spoons pink, always nice to have a back up plan though.

You have sort of the right idea you just need to put the spin n glo right next to the sand shrimp. And the reason that you need the lead to be able to slide on the line is so you can feel the bites. And that is why you need the swivel from the mainline to the leader to stop the sliding lead from going to far down your line. If you are looking at your picture just tie a swivel separating the mainline from the leader just to the left of the lead and put your spin n glo just to the right of your shrimp. A good place for visuals of various salmon and steelhead river rigs is to go to a sporting goods store and look in some of their books. If you have any more questions just reply back.

i got it now :)

i see that i can use different types of lures, so does a non buyont lure restriction just mean they cant float at the top?

A non-bouyant lure restriction just basically means that any lure that does not float can only be one hook with one point. Check the regs for a more detailed description of this rule because I know that there is also a hook gap restriction from point to shank but I am not sure of the exact size at this time. And you ARE legal using the plunking rig that I described.

Also, are you saying that there should be a hook off of the spin glow and put the shrimp on that?

edit- nvm i got it for sure this time.

The picture that you just showed is the correct way to rig a plunking rig, just make sure the spin n glo is able to slide freely on the leader because it needs to spin in the current. And also it is best to use a pyramid sinker for your lead rather than the common bank sinker you have shown in the picture. Other than that, what you have pictured is the correct way to do it.
