So on Saturday after a long day of moving a friend I laid down for a nap only to be woken up by the neighbors dogs. I got up and was grumpy and couldnt seem to shake it so I told my wife that I needed to be alone for a while so she said "Go fishing or something" What a great idea...I knew I married her for a good reason!
Off to deep lake I went with my Pontoon boat and my baitcaster and spinner. Landed there about 1830 and it was so packed....on the shore that is. After 20 feet in the water on came the headphones and I was off to the other more secluded side of the lake where no screaming kids and yelling moms were and I reached my destination....400 yards of lillys, underwater grass, overhangs and brush and hidden inlets. I just bought the new top water system by Doug Hannon. Its a system of a really life like snakes that slither perfectly on the water when you twitch em. I wanted to try them out and see how well it works. I tossed it onto the bank and swam it out into the muck and onto the lillys. The second that snake hit the water and I mean the second it hit it there was a huge splash and it was gone. I waited 3 seconds and set the pole like I was trying to break it....good thing too because when I brought in a 4.6 Lb largmouth Bass I saw that I just barely hooked his mouth. What a fight ......I had on 12 Lb spiderline with a 10 Lb leader tied directly to the line and Im glad that I had heavyer line on because it wrapped itself around those lillys and I had to muscle him out. sent him on his way after getting a good look and wooing some passer bys in a little row boat.
(Ive fished athis lake many times and the bass population is healthy, although the big ones are gone because of people trolling over beds in the spring and then not releasing. Ive seen it so many times that a good 5 lb or better gets reeled in and then bopped on the head and into the cooler. )
So I continued that system for a while with only the 2 lb or better taking a shot at it. I switched to a 3 inch flat tailed worm (white) and jigged it near the lillys with about a 1000 little hits on it from bluegills, immature bass, spinnys young trout. I couldnt keep the line in the water. I debarbed my hooks and started counting how many I could catch in 1 hour and the # topped out at 22 caught and an unknown amount of "Im small but Ill grab the tail and take it for a spin" bites. This is the funnest time I have had fishing at this lake and would have only been topped if I could have sharred it with somebody. This lake has no gas engines allowed and the water is nice and clear.
