Since I live close to Long Lake decided to give it a try. Contacted my neighbor, Bob Johansen, who has been described by Mike Carey as a Master Bass Fisherman, and asked if he wanted to go. Bob declined with a smile.
So this morning around 7:15 I launced at the public site. The water was a still as glass. There was a cover of fog over the lake. My juices started to flow as I was sure I was going to land the lake record of 9 - 10lbs. I moved slowly North along the West side of the lake toward some docks.
Now I was ready. With my trusty spinner bait tied on I made my first cast. Suddenly I discovered the reason for my "friend" Bobs' smile. I was into the weeds. It didn't take long to figure out that the entire lake was covered with weeds just under thesurface. Not one to give up easily I switch to a weedless jig and attempted to work the docks. After about 90 minutes I was beaten by the lakes defenses.
I did talk with a home owne along the way and he told me that the state had put in the first dose of weed killer and was due to put in a 2nd dose in September. This was good news as I know that this lake contains some great bass.
When I got back to the ramp I saw that two other boats had launched and they must of gone South as I didn't see either of them. Hope they figured out how to battle the weeds.
Mike
