Caught another limit of 5 fish today from 9:00 to 11:15 with salmon eggs. Lost/missed several more. I heard some grumblings and murmurs from other folks as to why they weren't catching while I was. What I'm about to write would usually be forum material so, Site Editor, bear with me!!! Folks, if you are serious enough to be sitting around on a chunk of ice at temps in the single digits and teens, then GET SERIOUS! Think about setting aside $20 to $30 for a 18-24" jigging rod and leave the full size at home. Many come with a small reel attached. Another few bucks will get you a spring-style strike indicator that shows every bump and take and can differentiate between the two. January rainbows under 12" of ice are not nearly as active and aggressive as those we pursue in May and June. Downsize your line to 4 or 6 lb versus the 8, 10 and 12 you're using now. Hooks should be no bigger than 10s (I use 12s). Think SMALL, think LIGHT, and drop some Pautze salmon eggs on them! Good luck!
Editor's Note: Some very useful information and coming from the midwest, I can verify Gary's comments are spot on. Mike
