Fished Diablo on our return trip from Ross Lake Resort (wonderful place--will be better in July, once the lake and feeder streams opens for fishing). Started from near the dam and worked the shaded areas to near the bridge by Colonial Campground. Started with a bead-head olive and black woolly bugger under a Type III uniform sink line. C&R'd one rainbow, as well as getting a number of hits. Still, fishing was a little slow. Pulled over at the dock at Thunder Point for some floating line action. Ended up losing my w-bugger. Bagged out from there shortly after two guys showed up to claim their campground. Resumed fishing with a holographic tinsel version of the fly I lost. No takes, no hits. Switched to an olive and peacock Carey Special. And then the hits started! Brought three or four more to hand in short order, while losing one or two more. All fish were rainbows and were at least 12" and about the same size. Interestingly, closer we got to Thunder Creek (the creek that comes out by the Colonial Creek campground), more pale in color were the trout. This was probably due to the milkiness of the water from the creek and the adaptive camouflage of the trout. All trout were scrappy fighters. A very good afternoon of fishing!
