1st trip to Samish this year , only person fishing today. This has been a very spotty lake for me. I might catch on fish every 3-4 times out, usually over 3-5 lbs.

Today's water temp 60-62. Had a hard time finding fish. None in the usual bay of pads on the East side. Saw a monster by Lutherwood, but it ignored my offerings. Saw a few 1-3 pounders near outlet, hooked a good one on a Zoom Super Salty Fluke, but didn't set the hook hard enough. Also had a hard strike on a floating Rapala that missed. That was it for the day.

I read reports of Smallmouth here, but have never seen one, much less caught one. Frankly, I hope that smallies do not get established here. Yes they are fun, but they seemed to have completely replaced the small population of 4-8 pound largemouth that I used to catch in Lake Whatcom 25 years ago.

I went back to Samish about 2 weeks later & can confirm that there are indeed smallmouth here. I saw at least a dozen on beds on the south end of the lake along a shallow gravel area. I don't know why I never saw them before.
