This fishing expedition could be titled "Semper Gumbii", or Always Flexible... The BBs of BL had to be, to catch those tricky trout at FIshtrap Lake on this day.
We started out at 4:00 in the morning. I believe The Almighty still has the day on Auto-pilot at that time...
Clear as a bell. A Blue Moon was still gliding across the Southern Horizon, but was ready to dip below it as we arrived at the Lake.
The surface of the lake was as flat as the head of any politician you can think of as we launched the boat again to test the techniques and talents of two grizzled veterans of the fishing wars.
As early as we started out, we did not get a single fish the first hour we were out. We could hear the banter of distant coyotes as they laughed at us and taunted us with THEIR tales of fishing skill. Even a (not-so-distant) turkey gobbled his two-cents worth. Around Fishtrap Lake, even the wildlife thinks they are fishing experts...
Seeing as though our previous successes in the lake near the resort were not likely to repeat themselves this day, we decided to move away from the well-known confines of the north part of the lake and head south.
As we trolled southward on the lake, we saw deer on the shoreline, but no other fishermen. It was quiet (except for the aforementioned smart-alecky coyotes). We did not experience any piscatorial interest in our offerings during our transit, either.
The lake narrowed as we entered the southern reaches of the lake, and STILL no bites.
We entered into a widening portion of the lake, taking a left turn (turn to PORT)... and then
WHAMMO!! Along the basalt cliffs on the southern end of the lake, the fish began to bite. And bite HARD. We continued to cruise up and down along the shoreline, limiting-out on 12"-14" trout. Oh, and 1 really confused CATFISH--- he went for the Super-Duper! Nothing beats being flexible, when fishing at Fishtrap Lake.
Watch the lake change in the coming days--- it has been hot these past few days, and the lake is relatively shallow. It is predisposed to becoming warm, green and murky due to warmer days and eutrophication.
A great day fishing, though!! Thanks, WDFW
